President Obama's speech was...and the job report means....

Recommended Posts

I watched the entire night and Obama's speech. Mainly I wanted to see if he could lift me people like he has before. For me I didn't see it (or feel it) Perhaps some of you here will think that I couldn't be made happy by anything he said, I'll be fair enough and say thats probably true.

How did you regular Obama supporters feel?

The job report but any measure was terrible. I'm sure it can be spun but 96,000 new jobs just isn't going to cut it.

I actually thought it was a solid speech, at least in the message. Very JFK-esque, encouraging voters to recognize that we need to stop with all the free lunches, lift ourselves up where we can, and help others up when they need it. I made a post some time ago, maybe last year, stating something similar...that people need to quit being so fucking selfish and screaming "me, me, me!" at our politicians, and instead look at what cuts we could each make if it would help the country become solvent again. Also, a hole that takes 40 years to dig cannot be filled in 4.

I didn't have the ability to watch the entire speech. for those parts I listened to appeared to mirror his 2008 campaign and or speeches he has made numerous times before.

So he's not an Etch-a-Sketch candidate then?

well... his writers at least are consistent.

I watched a discussion (on NBC) about Obama's speech and they noted that there were not extraordinary claims or suggestions, it was typical and "hum drum".

I didn't watch either primary, so I won't comment on the speeches or comparisons beyond the above.

No lies either, then (unlike Ryan).

He clearly tossed out a handful of misleading half-truth statements.
There were some extraordinary claims to be sure.
Like all politicians - it's just dirty.

Well, I didn't watch any of it so I'll just take your word.

You probably shouldn't comment about things you didn't listen to.

It was not simply repeating the same things as said before.

If anything was a half truth, that's at least a 100% improvement on the flat out lies told by Ryan.

Did he promise to cut taxes by 20% and eliminate the deficit (something that every independent economist says is mathematically impossible)

The day the Democrats took over was not January 22, 2009. It was actually January 3, 2007. The Democrats took over the House of Representatives and the Senate at the very start of the 110th Congress. The Democrat Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the first time since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995.
For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy that everything is “Bush's fault,” think about this: January 3rd, 2007, was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress.

At the time:
The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77
The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%
The unemployment rate was 4.6%
George Bush's economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 CONSECUTIVE MONTHS of JOB GROWTH

Remember the day...
January 3rd, 2007, was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee.
The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy?
BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!
Congress added to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac FIASCOES!
Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie - starting in 2001 – because it was financially risky for the US economy.
And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA!
And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie? OBAMA and the Democrat Congress.
So when someone tries to blame Bush,
REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd, 2007.... THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!
Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress, and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democrat Party. Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for 2008 & 2009 as well as 2010 & 2011.
In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.

For 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the 2009 budgets.
And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete 2009.
If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets.
If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself.
In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I approved expanding that deficit four-fold since January 20, 2009

James Carville: Not the Best Speech of the Convention

http://townhall.com/tipsheet/katiepavlich/2012/09/06/james_carville_not_the_best_speech_of_the_convention

When Carville shrugs his shoulders at BHO you know the Dems have lost faith. It's all over but the wiping.

Nice out of context quote. He also said: "The Democrats had a very very good convention here and
the level of oratory was very high"

Except for the star, BHO is not getting good reviews anywhere this morning. At least as far as I have heard.

It would be more accurate to say conservative slant. The same as you only look at liberal data.

The simple fact is the speech was just okay. Several liberal folks agree on that. There were some really good speeches made but Obama's was not one of them and he is the key. I think it hurts him more because there is such an expectation out there. I really believe there were undecideds watching to see if he could get them jazzed like he did before but he failed at that. It will not lose the election for him but it did nothing to help him. Early surveys are showing no bounce out of the convention. I do not think the big bounces of the past are possible anymore with all of the spin. That said, little bounces are possible. The GOP got one but the dems are probably not going to get anything out of it. Did anyone realize he said nothing about his signature piece of legislation or about the bailouts? I think that is smart but it is easily pointed out as well to work against the left. Unless Romney sucks in the debates I would say this election is going to be won by the right.
