billvon 3,132 #29 August 29, 2012 >Well, I guess at least they got tossed out of the convention.... But these guys didn't: ============== August 28, 4:23 PM, 2012 A Troubling Chant on the Convention Floor By Jack Hitt An unscripted moment happened late this afternoon that caused the assembled mainstream media to turn away in the hope that it would disappear. As I was standing in line for a sandwich next to an Italian and a Puerto Rican correspondent, a controversy was unfolding on the floor. The RonPaulites, whose furious devotion to a single idea have made them the Ellen Jamesians of the right, were protesting a decision by RNC officials not to seat members of the Maine delegation, which was split between Paul and Romney supporters following rule changes made just prior to the convention. There were energetic shouts of “Aye!” and “Nay!” as a Puerto Rican party functionary—Zoraida Fonalledas, the chairwoman of the Committee on Permanent Organization—took her turn at the main-stage lectern. As she began speaking in her accented English, some in the crowd started shouting “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!” The chanting carried on for nearly a minute while most of the other delegates and the media stood by in stunned silence. The Puerto Rican correspondent turned to me and asked, “Is this happening?” I said I honestly didn’t know what was happening—it was astonishing to see all the brittle work of narrative construction that is a modern political convention suddenly crack before our eyes. None of us could quite believe what we were seeing: A sea of twentysomething bowties and cowboy hats morphing into frat bros apparently shrieking over (or at) a Latina. RNC chairman Reince Priebus quickly stepped up and asked for order and respect for the speaker, suggesting that, yeah, what we had just seen might well have been an ugly outburst of nativism. ==================

lawrocket 3 #31 August 29, 2012 That was the thing about Reagan. He wasn’t a genius. But he wasn’t an idiot, despite the “amiable dunce” moniker that he was given. Reagan was much smarter than he was given credit for. No, he did not have the intellectual prowess of Carter. What was Reagan’s key brilliance, in my opinion? He was smart enough for three key things: (1) smart enough to craft a vision; (2) smart enough to know his strengths (enabling him to communicate that vision); and (3) smart enough to know his limitations (which enabled him to surround himself with those who could implement his vision). Take a look at President Obama. What is his vision? Either he doesn’t have one or it hasn’t been communicated effectively. “Hope and change” were visions that he lacked the political wherewithal (or political ability) to execute. Now his vision is “forward” and consists of tax hikes on the wealthy. Did Carter have a vision? Maybe, but it was spread out by dabbling in all areas. Then look at Reagan. We all knew that Uncle Ronnie wanted: (1) to defeat communism; and (2) to ease government restrictions on the economy. Reagan was not smart enough to know that SDI was not feasible. The Soviets had no idea that we couldn’t do it, though. Reagan didn’t tell people that he’ll have more flexibility after reelection. He just did it. Yes, Reagan had failures. His vision, communication and political acumen cost a trillion dollars in the defense industry. Reagan intensified the Cold War by turning it into a war of financial attrition. We’re still paying for it. (And like it or not, it solidified the idea that money is no object for the federal government). He had problems. Reagan wasn’t as intelligent as Obama. He was simple. He kept it simple. And it worked. My wife is hotter than your wife.
