What does it take to be charged with Terrorism in the USA?

Recommended Posts

If a group of men trained to use guns and explosives stockpile weapons and IED components in US soil and have the dedicated aim of killing the POTUS and unleash a range of terror attacks on civil and military targets surely they are terrorists. You can bet you ass that if they were Muslims you'd most likely never hear of them as they'd be flown to some 3rd world or eastern European shit hole and tortured or supermaxed. Yet these murdering scrots...

Get away with being charged with 'malice murder, felony murder, criminal gang activity, aggravated assault and using a firearm while committing a felony.' WTF????
Just what the hell counts as terrorism? Let alone Treason?

Looks like this is where we stand thus far.

This is not true. There was a two year investigation here in Detroit that led to the arrest of several muslims on charges of conspiracy to sell stolen goods and illegal possession/sale of firearms. None of them were charged with terrorism despite Luqman Ameen Abdullah's anti-government rhetoric, who was subsequently shot dead after refusal to surrender and opening fire on FBI agents.

When asked why these men weren't charged with terrorism, the US Attorney simply stated that the "charges speak for themselves."

Good question! We have one terrorist (whose organization actually carried out bombings of the Capitol and the Pentagon) who is now Associate Professor of Law at Northwestern University School of Law. Her husband, who also was a member of the same terrorist organization, is now a professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He also is alleged to have personal and political ties to the current President of the US. Go figure!

Sure look at the threat from Islamist terrorists but where is the rest of the domestic terrorists? The majority of attacks on US soil since 9/11 have been domestic terror attacks not associated with Islamist groups, so where are they on the map?

Good point, I see where you are coming from now.

From my point of view, since 9-11 terrorists are Islamic extremists. Domestic terrorists are rednecks that commit a crime of violence. Those are different mental profiles in my thinking.

Now that I think about it, prior to 9-11 I thought of terrorists as Palestinians who attacked Israel and highjacked airliners and cruise ships.

Domestic terrorism is a new mental concept for me.

Just copied from a news article: "The FBI defines domestic terrorism as acts by U.S.-based individuals or groups that involve violence against the populace or government, without 'foreign direction'.” By this definition it would seem that the Ft. Hood shootings are foreign-directed terrorism since the shooter was obviously influenced by "global jihad" (IMO). Of course the administration does not recognize this attack as "terrorism" but just another moonbat shooting.

Skyrad - Yep, there have been plenty of terrorist attacks on US soil against Muslims since 9/11. I was fixated on the high-profile shootings and did not consider the acts of murder and vandalism against Muslims and others. These are acts of terrorism. But Ron's map does not pinpoint the location of someone who might act alone.

Here is some:

2001 Anthrax attacks
2001 JDL plot to blow up King Fahd Mosque in Culver City California and office of Darrell Issa.(Foiled by FBI)
2002 United States, Luke Helder pipebombs in mailboxes in the Midwest. Motivation to protest government control over daily lives and the illegality of marijuana.
2002 Beltway sniper attacks.
2005 University of Oklahoma bombing
2007 Liberty University VA pipe bomb plot.
2008 San Diego Fed Ex pipe bomb attack.
2008 Knoxville Unitarian Universalist Church attack.
2008 Suicide bombing in Dalton
2009 Starbucks bombing NYC
2010 Austin Texas Joseph Stack flys plane into IRS building.
2010 Bomb attack on Jacksonville Mosque.
2011 Maryland letter bomb attacks.
2011 Hanover, Annapolis letter bomb attacks on DoT.
2011 Spokane Wasington bomb (defused)
2011 Lakeland pipe bomb
2011 Terre Haute Pipe bomb (defused)

Admittedly many of these were not spectaculars but if you were the person targeted I suggest they would be not be taken lightly. What is worrying is how many have there been that were not treated as terrorism, such as the story that kicked off this thread. I know the 'sovereign citizen' movement has killed at least six police officers in the last couple of years yet despite being listed as a top terrorist threat by the FBI they fail to appear again and again as terrorist attacks. (Tim McVeigh was a sovereign citizen).

The Aryan Brotherhood have committed many racial killings in pursuit of their political cause, yet these are not registered as terror attacks for some reason either it seems.

But still, mostly lone crazys that would not have been "mapped" as terrorist organizations. Hindsight probably would show that some did need to be tracked although that might raise Constitutionality questions ....Patriot Act comes to mind.

BTW - I agree that the group at Ft. Stewart is a terrorist group and should be treated as such. But I'm not sure that a group can "legally" be considered a terrorist group until an act of terrorism is committed. So far they are only charged with "malice murder, felony murder, criminal gang activity, aggravated assault and using a firearm while committing a felony". They are also described as an "anarchist" anti-government group. I have read an article or blog that tries to tie the head honcho to the Republican Party since he allegedly served as a page at the 2008 RNC. That would be like someone trying to tie the Democrat Party to the KKK terrorist organization since Robert Byrd played a major role at some their conventions.

Agreed that would be stupid.

But as fr as the federal government is concerned, all it takes is to be a war veteran with a Ron Paul bumper sticker.

Yes, that is exactly what the government meant when they said domestic terrorism groups are likely to recruit veterans because of their military skills.

They're on the map. The FBI and the ATF are investigating a lot more than makes the news.
The ATF is pretty bad on a lot of levels, but does investigate a lot of stuff.
The FBI is and has targeted a lot of the domestic terrorist groups, and has always done a pretty decent job of infiltrating.
Look at the recent "Terrorist was building a bomb but ended up getting the materials from an FBI guy" cases.

And when they charge these guys with murder, they are going away for a long, long time. The ones in the OP are probably facing "Life Without" for two murders, one being a juvenile.
Some people (me included) feel that charging them with "terrorism" as a criminal charge is a political stunt that validates the criminals stance as a "political prisioner". Charge the stupid thugs as criminals and they go to prison for just as long, without any fanfare or posturing.

I believe that is a very strong point, it should be across the board then for all terrorists though.

I fully agree. But the ones filing the charges are the prosecutors. Who are usually elected officials.
Which means that any of the current "boogeymen" (currently muslims) are going to get the full boat of charges, including terrorism, to make the prosecutor look better in the press, and to the "useful idiots."
