I am reminded of the tale of the French spy who infiltrated the ranks of the English ca. 18th century. Using a fox hunt as the point at which he would return to his own lines, his last act was to kill the fox with his sabre as he galloped away.

The irony, of course, is that killing the fox does not mark a win, and that by so doing he merely demonstrated his consummate ignorance of the activity.

'Baptism' is similarly a bastardization of the ritual Mikvah, as interpreted by European Pagans. Someone of Hebrew extraction living in Judea in the 1st Century (the name escapes me) would have been puzzled by the rigamarole surrounding the process.
