wolfriverjoe 1,523 #2 August 14, 2012 It depends on which account you believe. The off duty cop may or may not have been speeding. The little girl may have darted out into the street without warning, or she may have been walking across. The motorcyclist (off duty cop) laid the bike down in order to not hit the girl full-on, which probably would have killed her. He had a broken leg and a dislocated shoulder from the get-off. And two dudes ran up to him and started beating the shit out of him. And he pulled out his gun and shot one of them. Who turned out to be the dad of the little girl. It isn't "SYG" because he had no way to escape. It's not too farfeched to think that the dad and his friend would have seriously injured or killed the motorcyclist (cop or not). They were hitting and kicking him in the head (among other places). That's not "play" fighting."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." normiss 906 #3 August 14, 2012 Agreed. Very sad incident. There ARE plenty of neighborhoods there on the southside that you need a weapon on your person to survive. No matter how confused the city officials are.

kelpdiver 2 #5 August 15, 2012 QuoteInteresting.... by a cop??? what a shitball of events that turned into. But it's not SYG. It may be fair to say that SYG is more about civil suit protection than a big change in criminal prosecution.

By "just about everybody," what percentage do you mean? The rule of thumb when I was there, Jul 76 - Jan 81, 80% of the people are driving around high on something 80% of the time and they all have guns. How accurate is that statement? I can't say but, I and my friends accepted it as a watchword. I was only shot at once, three rounds. That incident occurred when I slid through a stop sign on a icy road at night and scared another driver. ``All calculations based on our experiences elsewhere fail in New Mexico.'' ~ Former Governor Lew WallaceLook for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. Someone shot at you b/c of that??? Holy sh*t, you surely are taking the sub or a bus in winter time now, right? (And if the bus is starting to dash on icy winter road, all passengers are shot? What are you doing, then?) Sliding on an icy road happened to me, too. I was expecting a giant thud but, never any muzzle flash. It seems, several of you guys lost a natural feeling for danger in the wild - not every sliding car is armed from tires to roof, some of them simply are sliding as it's an icy road Holy Jesus, throw some satori, please. dudeist skydiver # 3105

normiss 906 #11 August 15, 2012 I had a handgun pulled on me and pointed at me in Manhattan. For taking the gap in front of someone. He floored it, pulled up beside me, pointed the gun at my face. I don't think I've EVER driven so fast in downtown NYC before. Hit the Holland Tunnel and never looked back. These days my friends wonder why I have no desire to go to NYC again. Been there enough times, thank you.

I thought an armed society was a polite society? Maybe we just have different ideas about what is polite? Well on the polite side, I witnessed a bar fight between a long haired freak and a short haired cowboy. The freak actually threw the first punch, a beer can rim end straight into the face of the cowboy. A couple punches later the freak guy reached behind him and pulled his pistol out of his belt and tossed it to the bartender as an act of kindness. Then he proceeded to beat the shit out of the cowboy. It was the polite thing to do because he had the advantage. The freak was still sober.Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them. And survived, what a lucky dude I am Anyhow, thank you and your colleagues telling me/us aliens how dangerous (some places in) the US are. Perhaps, if more aliens like me would read that, you guys would be amongst yourselves/enjoy yourselves much longer - that's what some Texas guys prefer. Back to thread - even it doen't matter where it was, shootings do occur everywhere on a daily basis in your wonderful country. If it's a SYG issue in Chicago or not. Who cares. "Only an armed society is a polite society". What a rubbish. F. e., as per recent History channel report, there are about 51 million weapons in Texas households - holy crap! Perhaps winters in Texas are not that cold - I would not like to slide on an icy road in front of XX's house! dudeist skydiver # 3105
rehmwa 2 #15 August 15, 2012 It's sad that the first reaction by the father was to attack the driver from the ACCIDENT rather than try to take care of his little girl tragedy for the little girl and her family, but the driver had the right to protect himself from attack - if the father had not been killed, he should have gone to jail - grief (or more likely, being idiotically temperamental) is not a justification for assault or attempted murder the fact that the driver was a cop is completely moot (only from reading the article) ...
