Obama takes over communications

Recommended Posts

The Gummint already comes right into your house on the TV and radio, through the emergency warning system.

I guess they want to reach people who only stream media over the net. This is akin to the Patriot Act in some ways -- I'm not at all sure I like it, but it's probably made out to be much worse than it really is.

Nothing in there that particularly surprises or frightens me. I guarantee you that had the technology existed, FDR, Eisenhower or Nixon would have done the same thing. That the Bush Lite people didn't think of it is nothing short of amazing.

Actually I'm sure they did but just kept it quiet(er).. I also presume that the WH & military etc. have already more or less had this capacity since prior to the current administration; it's just the current one that decided to formalize it publicly. Damn lawyers.

What happens when a Republican takes charge of this? Sire, it's all nice and sweet and good and wonderful and charming and beneficent and jovial now. But what about when a right winger comes in and uses it. Then I don't think you'll be liking it.

Oh, I'm sure that would never happen. The way things are at this moment is how they will stay for the rest of time I'm sure.

<--------very opposed to Obama, but...

It's about allocating bandwidth during a national emergency. Read the part "National Response Framework."

For example, when I was in technology in telecommunications.. during the OKC Bombing, we had to allocate the switch provisioning to a tiered hierarchy of Federal Responders, state responders, within a matrix of functional responsibilities. It changed almost daily based on that day's communications report.

Private citizens were last on the list since there was only so much bandwidth until we could logistically place more COWS (Cellular on Wheels) in the area.

This is no different than rationing during WWII, Having control of the National Oil Reserves, etc.
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

+1

Except that Bush probably did think about it and unlike Obama, decided to keep his big yap shut about it. Damn Security leaks......

Exactly. Because secret government takeovers of communications networks are so much better than telling people what it is and why it's happening. Can't see any potential for abuse there.

And what exactly is the over site committee supposed to be for again?

News flash, there is all kinds of things going on that the general public doesn't know about. The only real question is if the programs are best served if the whole world knows about it. That's kind of the basis for having security levels such as confidential, secret, top secret, or even the unheard of TS/SCI.

And as we saw with the whole water boarding thing, if Nancy Pelosi doesn't agree with it (even though she agreed with it in the beginning) she will spill the beans to the press, no matter what the classification.
