So it appears cops can taser you for jaywalking and not producing an ID.....wait a second.....asking for ID for jaywalking????
Illegals can't be carded.....why jaywalkers?
Are they seriously that much more of a threat to society than an illegal alien. (can I call them illegal aliens without risk of persecution???).

My dad was right. This country IS going to hell in a hand basket.

Really? You don't see the difference between someone who has clearly broken a regulation vs someone who is just walking down the street minding their own business but happens to be brown? Of course the cops can demand ID from illegal aliens, but they need to determine they are illegals before they make the demand. Jaywalkers on the other hand have already indicated they are doing something wrong by jaywalking.

The right wing echo machine is churning this story out right now because it allows them to conflate the two issues. Interestingly, Casselberry is just down the road from Sanford, FL. ;) How many white men in business suits has the Casselberry Police Department stopped for jaywalking lately? (Oh! Nevermind, white men in business suits don't jaywalk).

To us, it's just a local story.
Also as an FYI, I have seen white men in business suits tackled in downtown Dallas for jaywalking.

Casselberry has pretty hardcore cops - they've been know to be pretty aggressive.
I was stopped once in Casselberry. Before the first cop got out of his car, I was surrounded by three others. Sure felt threatened and intimidated. For making a u-turn - the no u-turn sign was behind a tree. :| I was not ticketed. :)But....there were five cops surrounding my car with hands on weapons. Seriously???

most of the country views jaywalking as great an offense as doing a lane change without signalling. (not into or blocking another)

They used to have a LOT of titty bars, and regular bars, as well as they are on the 'path' most party people take from downtown after an evening of imbibing.

I have always thought it was just the culture in the cop shop there....but I can't say given only one interaction with them.

If the PO had told the man he was going to site him for jaywalking, then I think asking for an ID was proper.

If PO just came up and ask for an ID then wrong.

Causing a ruckus with police when carrying with or without permit could have ended badly.

Lesson learned. If I am videoing an event don't mess it up by speaking over the video.

I won't get into jaywalking laws. The guy could have just littered and the results been the same.

we DO have somewhat more important laws to enforce

that's a tough one

do you really want the cops deciding which laws to enforce and which to ignore?

I guess I'd agree if the cop sees a murder, and a jaywalk, happening at the exact same time - I'd expect him to go chase the murderer. But if he just sees one or the other, I don't see the point you're making.

Repeal jaywalking laws!;)

...or at least don't taze those who do...especially for not showing i.d. Some people simply don't have i.d or just don't carry it while pedXing...

I was never tazed when I failed to produce i.d to the gestapo...I just gave 'em an alias and went about my way.:P

(though, if you're or going to an Amscot like the dude in the video, it's positive he has identification...otherwise, how brotha finna get paid?

Having watched the entire video, the guy had an attitude and was completely disrespecting the police officers. Maybe the police officers did say you were jay walking, and that part of the video wasn't shown. The dude completely blew up the thing in a situation where those authority figures were not about to lose control of that situation. He's stupid, and so is his friend (who is now facing charges for carrying an unregistered weapon).

Stupid. :S

Citizens have no duty to respect police officers. The police officers totally overreacted and repeatedly escalated that situation.

I guess that would be sort of like, if a cop stopped someone and the person couldn't provide valid id to show he was a legal resident of the states, then the cop MUST detain him and have him deported.... Oh, but isn't that what we just decided was not to be done to illegal aliens? Or did I mishear Obama when he said not to question illegal aliens, and that we wouldn't take steps to deport people who don't have the right to be here.
If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead.

Rudy Guiliani is credited with cleaning up NYC and making it a much safer place to live. He did this by instructing his police officers to arrest and/or ticket people for everything. What they found is that many criminals have no respect for the law and hence, tend to be the ones that jaywalk etc. By stopping jaywalkers and asking for ID's they found many who were wanted on warrants and were able to take them into custody and get then off the streets.

I think these police officers acted correctly. They confronted a person who had just committed a crime, small as it may be and when the person became beligerent, I'm sure it raised their suspicions that something was wrong. Most people would have just pulled out their ID and been on their way with just a warning. Even if they were ticketed, they could have gone into court and fought the ticket. This guy clearly had an attitude, so did his friend. I'm sure the police thought he was hiding something and that's why they persued him. What would you have had them do? Say, "oh, you don't want to show ud your ID? OK, have a nice day, sorry to have bothered you".

I'm always amazed at how people want something done about crime and then complain when the police legally enforce the law.

That's pretty much the gist of it, though I think the main motivation is money, not to get criminals off the street. I suspect the majority of warrants are for unpaid fines...

I just hate being hassled for petty stuff...first it was turtle stopping out of a parking lot, two days later - seatbelt, then had insurance but no proof...then hassled for lighting bottle rockets on my own property, then hassled for playing catch on a private community road. Shit gets old after awhile...

We don't get to pick and choose which laws to obey. Nor is the police officer there to get into a debate with a citizen and show him the law. That's what we have courts for. If this idiot had a problem, he should have complied with the officers requests. If he wanted to complain about it, he coud have contacted this officers CO and filed a complaint or if he felt his civil rights had been violated, he could file a lawsuit. Challenging a police officer who is trying to do his job will never have a good outcome.

I didn't see officers reacting to disrespect.

Did you see a valid reason for the officers to tazer that person? I saw a man who was not resisting and posed absolutely no threat.

i agree that the cops made much more,,,,, of the "supposed" infraction than was necessary...:|

taking the guy aside and EXPLAINING that there IS a statute about where one can or cannot safely cross a street ( as well as any statute requiring that one show identification) would have been a better approach... than getting all " Tough Guy " about it..
( after all how much can the public respect cops who wear Short Pants!!!!) hahahahaB|;)

still, they over-reacted.... AS Did the P I T A woman...... who needs a smack Upside the head.. for EVERY time she used the word.. ' Supervisor ' .....I lost count after about TEN!!!!!..
she simply escalated the situation.... as the jaywalker then began playing to the camera.......and SHE became a terrible distraction to the officers.....

As citizens, not only are we expected to have a certain degree of Composure during crisis,,,, we also need to be careful NOT to throw gasoline onto a fire... thereby making matters worse....

i dunno about all that happened there on that street.. but for sure...
the last words to the O P are true, TRue, TRUE......[:/]
