I just don't know to say. Based on the statement from the city official the key words were "continuous meeting" and "zoning."

Bottom line he pissed off some liberal atheist with political pull somewhere sometime.

The cops were totally out of line using an assault squad to invade his home and arrest him. Chaek out the videos on it. However I do believe the the city was within it's rights to charge him. He was running Bible study that was drawing a large number of people on a regular basis,in a residential area. This was causing parking and and other issues for the rest of the residents of the neighborhood. That is why there are zoning laws, to insure that there are proper facilities to accomodate that type of influx of people to an area. Not to say that some of those laws aren't getting to be ridiculous at times...

It wasn't being held in his home. It was held in a "2000 square foot building" that he built in his backyard.
Sounds like this guy is trying to make himself into a martyr.

It sounds like there should have been some actions prior to sending in an assault team to arrest him. My office once broke a zoning law.... we got a letter telling us about it.....

There were actions before that. He should have checked the zoning laws before building (or converiting a building into) a church in his backyard.

No, he pissed off the city by trying to circumvent their zoning and construction laws.

However regardless of what you, or I, think - there isn't enough factual information in the report to make any sort of actual determination on the validity of the arrest and sentence. The article is intentionally inflammatory and emotional while providing limited information about the case.

As always, I'd bet there's a lot more to this than you're being led to believe.

edit: Thanks to Shotgun for proving my point and posting an article with more information about what actually happened.

Are you kidding me? If it had been Koran study the local Christian's would have wanted air strikes called in.

Funny, I don't remember Fox or anyone else screaming when the Mosque, that was legally proposed on 'Ground Zero" was in the news.

Really? I do. They generally were not screaming that denying the Mosque their space was a violation of the 1st Amendment.

This case is clearly different.:S

I clearly did not word that post right ( I have been up 28 straight for hours) my point was that fox and the Christian fundies were stoking the hysteria about the proposed Islamic center. For all their talk about rights, that one went right over their heads (or not).

Maybe, but in the end they would still be there un-touched by the law

I always question the stories in the news that are too clear cut. Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc. They all report selectively. This is another case.

I ran searches just like others here did. This guy had warnings. He was running a church in his backyard and it was a nuisance. It was not a quiet little study group. I have a neighbor across the street who has a study group at his house every Tuesday night. The cars aren't too numerous and I rarely notice. This guy was not in that category.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

We've seen this sort of this here before and depending on the neighborhood and how much traffic, how big the "study group" was and how much of an annoyance to the next door neighbor he was being, it might be or might not be perfectly fine.

I used to have a bible study group next door to me and it didn't bother me in the least unless they were holding some damned "social" past midnight. Fuck that. I'm trying to sleep.

Hey, you're the one who lives in that uber-liberal, anti-Christian state of Arizona. You're probably even the one who called the cops on this poor, persecuted Christian man.

I tell ya... You close your eyes for a second, and you can't tell the difference between here and the corner of Haight-Ashbury...

Then again, that's Maricopa County, an even more liberal enclave of Comrades.

Here in central Florida they shut down a house for causing a major disturbance in their neighborhood....Swinger's parties.

My neighbors have garage sales, parties, maybe even Bible study groups (I don't know) all the time. It doesn't seem to cause a problem around here, because we're all pretty respectful of each other.

It seems this guy may have been bugging his neighbors for a while, and since he was also in violation of a bunch of city codes, the neighbors were able to do something about it.

This site has a little more information about the backstory: http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2009-06-18/news/phoenix-police-raid-a-local-pastor-s-home-for-holding-church-services/
(kinda long - 3 pages)
