The only thing I wonder about is if the object of your faith can deliver the goods.

Religion has a couple of cheap but still useful tricks up it's sleeve, that I still utilize, that's all.

Like what?

The object of my "faith" is in most cases some variation of the placebo-effect. Research shows that it works, and I use it all the time on things like head-aches.

So how does this work exactly? Do you just eat an unconsecrated host like a sugar pill?

What is the success rate of your placebo given that you are actually aware or believe it's just a "sugar pill?"

Medical fact: placebo effect still works on many people even when they are told. I suspect the religious are like this.

True, the placebo effect can produce an impressive 20-30% response. Kind of demonstrates how we are hard wired to believe in something outside of ourselves. Nice thing about belief in God, He is 100%.

it demonstrates the power of the human mind over our physiology

placebo - or just a tool of self control - meditation - yoga - Biofeedback techniques - you seem to care what they "call" it

"biofeedback" vs "faith healing" - even if the exact same physiological processed - I find it amusing that it's admirable if a child survives a deadly disease by one, but he's a moron if he survives by the other and should have died

results matter - a rose by any other name

>Nice thing about belief in God, He is 100%.

I think people like the IRA, the Orange Volunteers, Anders Breivik, the Lord's Resistance Army, the Ku Klux Klan and the Salem Witch trial prosecutors demonstrate that a belief in God is not a 100% guarantee of anything.

100% - get enough people that feel strongly about something, anything, and enough weirdos will collect and organize into something stupid. And someone power hungry will exploit them

be it religion, political enthusiasm, enviromentalism, profits, sports, scrapbooking (recall the huge paper cut massacre in NY last spring), etc etc etc

The 100% guarantee only applies when God's reality is the framework of one's life. Those who claim to know God but do evil are not of God. Actions speak louder than words. The guarantee is that all things work together for good in the lives of those who love God.

>The 100% guarantee only applies when God's reality is the framework of one's life.

For the IRA God was absolutely the framework of their lives - and they were willing to kill to keep that framework. Heck, the Salem witch trials killed witches in the name of God.

>Those who claim to know God but do evil are not of God.

And those IRA people would say "those who claim to know God but are not willing to sacrifice themselves or others for God - do not know God." And both are just as correct.

Any God in particular your talking about? I always liked this quote:

When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.

That is for you to figure out. For me it is the God of the Hebrew prophets and the one recently illuminated through the life of Jesus Christ.
