Agreed, which is why we can end the thread with your OP. As best as I can recall - with the exception of Nixon's firing of Elliot Richardson and William Ruckeshaus during the "Saturday Night Massacre" over Watergate, every president's AG has been embattled (and/or a prick) over one thing or another, and every president has stood behind his AGs.

Everyone looks out for their own. Ever notice how whenever a dicey skydiving incident that's on YouTube starts getting discussed in earnest and linked on here, it's almost always taken down after a couple of days? Same shit, different latrine.

On the way to Court this morning, I heard is stated that members of Congress and the Administration are saying that the Republicans in the House are refusing to compromise over the documents they requested.

Yep. There's the word again. "Compromise." "The Republicans are asking documents. They won't just accept the ones we gave them. What assholes. They won't compromise."

Seriously. This is ridiculous. If I want documents I ask for them. If I don't get them I go for them. If they're privileged I'm told up front. I don't take, "Hey. I've got documents but I don't think you should havbe them. How about only taking the ones I don't mind you seeing? What? I'm compromising here and giving you some! Compromise with me. No? How dare you not compromise!"

This is where the whole compromise shit is leading us.

I seriously doubt that a Congressional committee being allowed to read some documents about a program run by the ATF is going to put the US's security at any risk.

This is simple covering up for a screw up.

Short memories are common these days. Much the same thing happend with ShrubCo and none of the right wing conservatives expressed anything but 100% support for the stonewalling. As usual, now that a Democratic administration is doing the EXACT SAME THING, right wing conservatives are waxing wroth.
The lack of consistency by RWCs is par for the course, unfortunately.

So, Grassley is asking a great question

Why exec privilege over documents that Obama has supposedly never seen?

And now Holder is saying this was Bush's program and it is his fault. So, since they hate Bush so much, why not release the docs and let him fry?

Gonna be fun to see what happens

Ya

Bush did it something like 6 times. Clinton somewhere around 16

but

This time he is doing the exact same thing as Nixon did

We all know what happened when the SC told Nixon he could not use it in that well known case

And yet when Bush did it you were calling for his head on a pike... and now defending Obama.

So, you are doing the SAME thing you bitch at others for doing.

Yep.

You are supporting those who acted like Shrub. Congrats on the high ground.

And note, the hypocrisy runs both ways. The next time a GOP guy is in office, the same arguments will hold.

Check out my ideas on this from back in 2004:

Note that I have the same criticisms of THAT president as this one. Unlike you, I don't think it's okay if Obama does it because Bush did it. I also don't disparage Bush for doing it but think it's okay because if Obama does it.

I have standards. I favor a nation of laws and rules.

It appears that you favor a nation of men. If your guy does it, that's swell. If someone else does it - BAD BAD BAD!

ps - yes, I still find it pretty ironic how much you approve of Obama doing just what Bush did. :D

Mmmm...never heard of negotiating a subpoena. You can go to the Judge and enter a Motion to Quash (asking the Judge to invalidate the subpoena). But negotiation? Nope. You are either entitled to something or you aren't. A partial answer is a wrong answer.

Not sure where executive privilege comes in when the Whitehouse knew nothing about the program. I'm not a fan of Executive Privilege in ANY administration. Yes, you are the President. You are also a temporary employee of the People of the US.

What was all that stuff about transparency a few years ago?

I've always been a fan of going with honesty and letting the chips fall where they may. If I screwed up, tell me so. I will not do it again. If I didn't screw up, there's no need to hide it. I know this rule doesn't necessarily work in DC. That's why I avoid the place. Honesty may be the best policy, but it's not the policy of any administration I've ever seen.

Semi- random thoughts...
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

that's pretty much what Andy said.

All cover ups are the same until a look at what is being hidden comes to light

Somehow, this seems to be much bigger than most. The family of the slain agent are still trying to get documents too.

Executive privelge is bullshit. The Obama Administration needs to release these documents. I'm disappointed in "Barry".

BTW, calling him by his proper name or title like a grown-up would really improve your credibility.

I took 'The Royals' to reference those within the beltway that think they are above the law, elitest, etc. Not necessary specifically POTUS, but all predecessors as well.

You're assuming that I'm concerned about establishing my credibility here. I don't care for the man, nor the President. I've never hidden that.

Not always. There are some considerations of it in terms of checks & balances, separation of powers. Sometimes - i.e. national security - I can see it. Problem is that, like any privilege, it can and is "abused."

but again, this is somewhat different because it's a President who promised transparency.

Even money the original program was signed off in the Oval Office, so it was a deal: "he'll sign this to let you off the hook and you'll keep your mouth shut instead of implicating the president..."

Barack Obama, January 21, 2009:

"The way to make government responsible is to hold it accountable. The way to make government accountable is to make it transparent, so the American people can know exactly what decisions are being made, how they're being well made, and whether their interests are being well served...For a long time now, there's been too much secrecy in this city. The old rules said that if there was a defensible argument for not disclosing something to the American people, then it should not be disclosed. That era is now over, starting today."

Then Senator Obama said this about Bush using exec privilege

Part of his statement

Quote

There’s been a tendency on the part of this administration to try to hide behind executive privilege every time there’s something a little shaky taking place. The administration would be best served by coming clean on this.”
