JohnRich 4 #1 June 15, 2012 News:100,000 illegal guns seized across China "IN A COORDINATED operation yesterday, police officers in China seized over 100,000 illegal guns... and a range of other illegal weapons in 150 cities across the country. "The weapons are being destroyed at special depots and collection points in an ongoing operation Chinese officials say is helping to seriously cut the country’s gun crime..."Full story: TheJournal.ie I'm happy to see that the Chinese have placed guards around the piles of confiscated weapons, so that the evil guns can't sneak away and do more mayhem. Now, finally, China will be safe from gun and knife violence. It can now become the home of the free, where everyone lives in perfect harmony with one another and their government. No longer will innocent citizens be threatened by thugs with guns and knives. Long live the spirit of Chairman Mao!

texascrw 1 #3 June 15, 2012 That was sickening, but I suppose you can't expect any better. I'm sure those pictures will keep Mr. Vaughan from Toronto, and little Charlie Schumer, in wet dreams for weeks. Maybe they should move there. It's seems more in line with their thinking. I would be happy to chip in on the tickets.

Guns really can kill people, if you light enough of them on fire.

JohnRich 4 #11 June 15, 2012 QuoteAt least it made a cool photo Yeah, it's kind of like burning witches at the stake. Well, the women being burned aren't really witches, nor are they really responsible for the things for which they are blamed. But what the heck, it makes everyone feel so much better to do it. BURN THE WITCHES! BURN THE GUNS!

No it isn't, even after all this time it's kind of tasteless to compare the Christian hobby of torturing innocents to death in public displays to the burning of objects. Think of it more as burning *ideas* and you'll find more agreement in the analogy. Yes, it's the idea of it that is more disturbing then the physical act of doing it. I'm thinking of other things that have been burned in protests, like books, crosses, churches and abortion clinics. Take a burning cross, for example: one the one hand it's just a piece of wood, but as a symbol of KKK racism and terror, it's something far worse. A bonfire of guns is just a bunch of wood and steel, but look at the nations that have confiscated and destroyed guns: Nazi Germany, North Korea, China, Venezuela. Those aren't exactly beacons of freedom, prosperity and human rights. So the idea of burning the guns, just like the KKK cross, symbolizes something far worse. Unarmed civilians are so much easier to massacre.I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. And yet, what was the most singularly powerful image from Tiananmen Square? A lone and unarmed man standing up to a column of tanks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989 Sure, he could have easily died trying to stop the tanks unarmed, he also probably would have died if he had been armed as well, but unarmed he's heroic in a way no amount of weaponry could have improved upon. I'm not going to go so far as to say that image stopped the massacre, but it sure as hell got the rest of the world on his side.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

China clamped down hard and a lot of people paid for it in the days and months after the protests.

B) The world's sympathy had no effect on the efficacy of the suppression. C) The individual who stood up to the tanks has apparently been identified by various sources; he was never prosecuted, but simply "dissapeared." The person standing in front of the tank had just committed suicide. D) When all was said and done, the protesters lost and the powers that be won. An RPG would have had an awful lot more impact than having the tanks stop briefly to avoid having to clean giblets our of their tracks.
