US self-defence expert banned from entering UK

Tim Larkin tried to board a plane from his home in Las Vegas on Tuesday, but was given a UK Border Agency letter saying "his presence here was not conducive to the public good".

Mr Larkin, who was due to host seminars, told the BBC the move was a "gross over-reaction". Mr Larkin had been invited to be a keynote speaker at The Martial Arts Show conference in Birmingham on 12 and 13 May, and to hold a seminar in Tottenham.

The Home Office said he was subject to an exclusion order.

A spokeswoman said: "The home secretary will seek to exclude an individual if she considers that his or her presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good..."
Full story: BBC

Self defense is not conducive to the public good? Dang, I guess they ought to ban that martial arts show too! You can't have people running around hitting each other!

So let's see... Brits aren't allowed to keep and bear arms for self defense, and the government doesn't want them to know how to use martial arts for self defense either. So where does that leave them? Run, hide, pray, beg... Good luck!

Really, JR. Try to think a bit more international:

That's Great Britain, not the USoA.

Their country, their rules. Accept it or leave it. If you're not welcome, you're not welcome - that is international.

Texas has its own rules, the UK too :P - not every country needs that much self-defense (British English) like others.

Your summary and characterization of the article has enough spins and omissions that it borders on the misleading. Compared to your presentation, the facts are much better and more fairly understood when the article is read in its entirety.

No spin at all. Copyright law prohibits me from reprinting the entire article. And I provided a link to the full story for all to see. So all I can do is introduce it with the essential facts. There is nothing intentionally misleading about that methodology - it's all there for anyone to see.

And I hope you don't think it is the correct policy to bar anyone who speaks out against a country's politics. Because I'm sure that if America barred everyone who spoke out against it, you would have a conniption fit.

RICH, very rich!
Spin on, Texas John.

P.S.: And that's all that s.b. needs to know about you.

We've plenty of martial arts instructors in the UK we don't need to import American ones, especially ones who try to mix it up with politics and UK social issues. The US is hardly a garden of Eden by comparison to the UK maybe he should stay at home and fix his own country's problems before coming and trying to fix ours.

(Besides which his marketing is legally and culturally unacceptable in the UK).
When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy.

In summary, I think we can conclude that Texas John's RICH reviews are unwelcome, unhelpful. And if he confine himself to his native Texas: the better for all of mankind. DO YOU GET IT, JOHN RICH???

Who is this "we" that you are pretending to speak for? It's rather presumptuous of you to pronounce judgement upon him on behalf of everyone else, don't you think? And if he shouldn't speak on subjects outside of Texas, does that mean that you also should refrain from spaeking on any topics outside your own home state?

My goodness, little Skypiggie is shocked at the attitudes that some people have here.

You just spun-up the meaning of my post as much as he spun-up the meaning of that article.

So when you responded with "pants on fire", you're now claiming that wasn't you calling him a liar?

:| Seriously?
I'm beginning to think you're not spinning; you really just didn't get it.

The "we" is the absolute we! The King's we!

Just as Texas John is outraged for all of "we", I am, too!! Except that he has no business in the UK, none in the US, none in TX, and probably none in his community in TX either.

Proof me wrong, Texas John!!! What have you done for YOUR community lately? EXCEPT POSTURIZING ON THE INTERNET?????

I think this is a mighty fine statement.

I cant help but notice that she would not take this position when discussing illegal immigration. Well at least not illegal immigration here in the US.

For starters most of Europe's population I would say.

About Mr. Larkin:

The last thing Europe needs is the next American cowboy telling us how violence solves everything, so good riddance.

Gosh, I didn't know you were king of the world, with the authority to speak for everyone. Pardon me for daring to challenge you, king pohl.

Aren't you "posturizing" yourself right now? Oh, pardon me again, I guess kings are allowed to posturize, but not peons like me.

One more question about this home rule thing. So when the Beatles were banned from America by many groups, radio stations, and even a President - you were absolutely in favor of that, because it was our rules, and we can do whatever we want, right?

As for speaking about politics in other countries, I could have sworn I just saw you doing that about U.S. health care, North Korea (whom you think are good guys), and so on.

And that last one, just goes to show you that your opinions aren't worth anything. So I shan't waste any more of my time with your ramblings. Have a good day, king pohl.

So when someone breaks into your home and is about to inflict violence upon you and your family, then what is YOUR non-cowboy solution?

That's not the business of Mr. Larkin. And surely not yours.

Keep your cowboy behaviour in Texas. Before telling us how to kill ourselves, you should clean your own backyards at first.

What will YOU do in those circumstances? If you think that violence in self defense is wrong, then tell me what the alternative is. Tell me what non-violent means YOU would use to save your family.

No one made that claim.

The fact that you have to ask this question pretty much proves that you're not really suited to teach us anything about self-defence. What about fleeing, alerting other people, going to a public place with lots of people, calling 911 etc. etc. etc. Violence is a way to protect yourself, but not the only way.
