Names vs. Name Calling [on topic]

Recommended Posts

There are so many times that I would like to participate here, but it becomes a name-calling insult-fest.

One thing I have noticed is that the more incognito one is the more likely one is to be abusive and start a circular argument. That seems useless, self-defeating, and frustrating (to say the least).

I'm as transparent here as anybody (maybe more), and I am asking for others to do the same.

I'm wondering how difficult it would be to address someone by their name, and then sign your name to it in ownership? Oh, and if you are firing off answers too fast to do that, then you aren't taking ownership of said answers (and you are often blithering, or arguing for the sake of argument).

That being said, I would like to hear from you folks, here.

If you answer on this thread, please be kind enough to pick a name that you claim and can be addressed by.

Lisa, sounds like a good concept. I have noticed that when some of the posters start using each others names it is done in a condecending manner.

What the hell you talking' 'bout there, Jimmy? ;)

My name . . . as it always has been.

Left myself wide open for that one, eh Pablo. Atleast I didn't get a condescending remark over my spelling of condescending.

One of the reasons my profile is accurate (except that the DZ listed is now closed) is because it keeps me honest.
If I get really obnoxious or abrasive, I'm not all that hard to find. I have a funy feeling something I wrote on here motivated someone to "report" my facebook profile as abusive. This is the only forum I regularly post to, and I almost never post on facebook.

There are a couple of the usual suspects here that engage in useless arguments, pointless bickering and stupid name calling. Several of them are very open about who they are. I've met a couple and they seem to be nice folks in person. Sometimes it seems like writing on a keyboard and simply seeing words on a screen allow people to forget there is an actual person on the other end. That can be true with e-mail exchanges as well as forum discussions. The lack of personal contact makes determining intent and emotions very difficult and allows for easy misunderstandings.
And some people just refuse to admit that they may be wrong about something and any dispute or disagreement is taken as a personal attack.

That's the problem. It's not about keeping you honest, but the problem with others on the forum that canNOT separate internet banter for reality. PhillyKev lost his job this way and I removed most identifying marks thereafter. When I was actively jumping, those around me knew who I was, but some hothead half way across the country doesn't really need to.

Whilst, my screen name is Squeak, and i garner a certain amount of anonymity from it.
Should you ever meet me in person I will be introduced as Squeak. It's the name i go by in skydiving.
To the point of me having it on all my kit as well as T-shirt with me name and stolen logo on it.
I'll not post anything on these forums that i will not account for in person.

I would hope that those who know me can attest to this.
Could be mistaken though:ph34r:

I support your wishes. Incognito posters are a pet peeve of mine.

I am wide open and honest and, I'm a flack magnet.

I thought that was "chick magnet". Clarify.

Ron, thanks. The other half is that by addressing each other as people we remember that there really is a human being on the other end of the "conversation" who deserves courtesy just as we ourselves would wish to be treated, regardless of the opinions being stated. :)
