Experiment part 2 - on topic posts

Recommended Posts

OK, based on some feedback in another thread I'm going to try part 2 of the "on topic" experiment.

If anyone wants to discuss a topic that is NOT one of the standard themes here* then post a thread with a subject like:

"Child care costs [on topic]"

That [on topic] will indicate that the poster wants the thread to remain on topic and will warn people that off topic posts will be deleted. Note that this does NOT mean that deleted posts contain PA's or anything, and if anyone feels they simply must post how Obama has destroyed health care in America they are free to start another thread on that topic.

We'll see how it goes. Note that moderators do not do anything to a specific schedule so a thread may go a few days with thread drift happening. This is important to note because if you reply to a post that has drifted it will likely disappear along with the original drifted post - even if your post is on topic.

--------------------------------------------
* - these would include things like polls on whether a gun ban is good or bad, how dumb Obama is, how gays are godless sinners etc.

Sounds... friggin'... awesome!

Will this include deleting posts stating the usual "it's X's fault" and posts which immediately devolve to canned "blame the republicans" or "blame the democrats" crap?

So many threads here are lost so quickly because people immediately begin finger-pointing rather than actually discussing a topic.

Its not just finger-pointing, but how complex issues always end up being dumbed-down and simplified.
...at least this is the case when people talks about economics imo.

Cheers! :)

This concept is very welcome.

If I read you correctly, if you have a reply to a post that drifted, but your reply is on topic, it would be better to reply to a post that has never had a thread drift "ancestor"?

Yep... That's the way the moderating functions of the website works. If you want to reply, And make sure your replys stays, simply reply to the original post. This way, your post won't be nested in a drift leg of the discussion.

I support your concept. Looks like more work for you however.

Not if they hire illegal immigrants to do the work.

Why do they encourage illegal immigrants?

Ever wonder how many illegals work as "visiting" DZ packers?

I always pack for myself, but I'm a Packers fan. Go figure.

So how do you think the Packers will do next year?

Thanks God, at last we might get some threads around here that don't turn into biparthied American spite fests.

Well, for the first time in a while, the Packers signed a fairly big free agent, Jeff Saturday from the Colts. So they should do pretty well.

Saturday... Maybe the weather will be good so that I can jump. But I'll need a packer, I don't feel like doing all that work myself.

I'm lazy, maybe I should get laid off so that I can collect unemployment, food stamps and welfare. And suck off everyone's taxes.

We should really give amnesty to all those illegals so that they can get "on the books" and pay taxes so I can suck off them.

How's that?? :P

I have to commend billvon for allowing me and another person to end a conversation. I started the thread but someone else got it off topic. It was really good there was no intervention. I'd recommend conversations go as they may until there are personal attacks and only warnings at that time. If personal attacks continue then shut it down. Trying to edit threads will be a nightmare for the moderators. I think the best think to do is to advise not to respond to those off topic, this way there will be no off topic talks that will continue.

This, and I agree with the concept.

I follow two "politics" forums. One is Speaker's Corner, here on dropzone.com.

The other is this one: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/41/politics/. Scan a few of the threads and you can just see the difference.

And i gotta say, the other forum is getting more and more of my time because the posts are on point, detailed, in-depth, and highly-moderated. Not to mention detailed, well-written, on-point posts aren't completely ignored or one sentence of said posts taken out of context (for the most part) like they are here.

And it's not like that is some Mensa forum. Those are poker players, for whom politics is a hobby, just like here. I know there are just as many intelligent and successful skydivers on here as there are poker players on there.

If this steps up the level of debate in here, then I am all for it.
