Sure. Because such things really do have an effect on how well a judge does his job. I don't think it was in good taste. But it's also not something to affect what he does on the bench.

Even if he has a lifetime record of fair jurisprudence, without any taints of racism in his court behavior or his rulings? He should have to throw all of that away because of one ethnic joke? Shouldn't his professional record be a better indicator of his character than one stupid e-mail? Would you like to have your life judged by a single cherry-picked e-mail?

No.
But some people are rightly held to higher standards than others. I would put Federal Judges very high on the list of expectations, especially since they are likely to sit in judgment on cases involving racism and/or politics.
This showed very bad JUDGMENT on the judge's part. That in itself could be considered disqualifying.
