Citing your article: "The U.S. announced in October it was sending about 100 U.S. troops - mostly special operations forces - to Central Africa"

Saying "4 African Countries" seems a tad misleading.

What do you expect from one of JR's push polls?

You should have read beyond the first paragraph. Quote:
"Rear Adm. Brian L. Losey, the top U.S. special operations commander for Africa, said the U.S. troops are now stationed in bases in Uganda, Congo, South Sudan and Central African Republic."
"Four countries" is precisely accurate, according to the news story. So what's your objection to that statement?

For those of you voting against U.S. troops in Africa, what about the atrocities being committed by the LRA, that our troops are helping the indigenous forces to hunt down and kill? Don't you care about the massacres of innocents that are occurring there? If 100 U.S. troops can save thousands of innocent lives, and bring peace to the region, isn't that worth it? We're not talking about thousands of our own soldiers involved in direct combat here - we're just helping the friendly forces do the tough work of defeating this madman.

Your forgetting man, we are held to a double standard! The same people that are saying we should NOT get involved now, are the ones that will be bashing us for not getting involved SOONER, as soon as it fits their agenda.

I for one am hoping for the opportunity to deploy to Africa :P

Save contracts or innocent lifes? Innocent lifes have never been the priority, and will never be.

Again, here comes the double standard. If we dont do anything, the left will bash us for not helping the innocent, if we do intervene, we are wrong because it was for super corporations and million or billion dollar contracts.

Not really enough info in that story to vote on. What is the US interest in the area? Is the US being compensated for the use of these expert advisers? 100 soldiers in four countries in a training or logistical role is quite tiny. Presumably those soldiers would be getting paid wherever they are, so the additional cost to the US is really small, possibly worth it in the long run if it buys access to resources or markets, or bottles up real "bad guys" and keeps them from harming other, more valuable allies and assets. Kind of like the "fight them over there, or fight them at home" doctrine. If the function is purely humanitarian, it should be coordinated through the UN, although that organization is so dysfunctional these days they couldn't organize squat.

There's a lot of ground between being the world's policeman and being so isolationist we wouldn't lift a finger to help anyone no matter the circumstance even if asked directly. Neither is healthy in the long run.

Good post.

I don't see any U.S. interests there, so it appears to be simply a humanitarian move.

And I would find it disturbing if Americans got so self-centered that they wouldn't lift a finger to stop a slaughter elsewhere in the world, for any reason, even though they had the power to do so. That's like a police officer just standing by and watching a woman get raped and doing nothing about it. What kind of country would that make us? One to be proud of?

100 soldiers is a small investment, and it seems the LRA would fall apart and disappear if their leader is killed. So if some small help from us would stop the slaughter, then that seems like a good use of our armed forces.

i don't see where "fighting there or here" fits unless there are sleeper cells HERE that are gonna fly into the Sears/Willis tower. Point number two, did not our founding politicians tell us not to go meddling in others affairs? I dont mind helping to save lives here and there now and then, But come on, i'd much rather pay off our debts and git our own shit together HERE first. Our nation is deteriorating at such a fast and anyone that believes different is ignorant to reality. I work my fucking ass off so section EIGHT lametards can have 250mins a month free cell service. HELPING others the way our government helps IS beyond getting old really really fast! Rant off til neXt time! ;P

News:

US troops now in 4 African countries

"U.S. troops helping in the fight against a brutal rebel group called the Lord's Resistance Army are now deployed in four Central African countries..."
Full story: Associated Press

This is what the USSOCOM is all about. These deployments are nothing out of the ordinary. JFK secured the SOF within the military establishment. The men and women serving in this shadow world are a very special breed of quiet professional.

wtf.... WE should not be deploying ANYWHERE... OUR nation is so toasted...

When you take a close look at what's happening there, our life here doesn't look so bad....like we're sooooo depressed...ya, right.:D

I remember back when the recession first hit and everyone (else) was on unemployment. It was like a big vacation, a party everyday...good times.

not bitchin about your life or mine bro! I'm bitchin about our government believing they need to stick our resources into everyone elses biz when we don't have all of our own ducks in a neat row. I don't have a major prob with playin a role like France did for us during our revolution.

As cliche as it is, I think you're right in many cases, however what's happening in this area of Africa is an exception and should become a priority.

I'm sure people may think they're suffering here, but it's still a matter of perspective. For the most part, we're doing just fine. In fact, if it weren't for all the greedy irresponsible people bitchin' about the problems they helped create, I wouldn't have even known there was a recession.

This country of drama queens is doing just fine...
