Don't hold your breath - as we've seen regarding gun control, 'bipartisanship' to the Dems means 'you give us what we want and we won't crucify you TOO badly in the press'. I guess a fair question to ask is, How much is one party expected to give without the other party bringing something to the table? How much of the military do you want to cut before you address any of the other issues? Bolas 5 #59 January 28, 2012 QuoteQuote>You say this like there is something we can do to get them to stop kidnapping people. >*News flash* There isn't. Agreed. The only way to avoid Somalian pirates is to avoid Somalia. (Which isn't that bad an idea overall.) Which is a good idea, however, if we pulled out, every oil tanker coming through the North Arabian Gulf would get hijacked. The Somalis would love it. They could make BILLIONS!!!! Plus, we still need that oil, especially when projects like the keystone pipeline keep getting shot down. Once again, novel idea, but scores low on the practicality scale. So they either use another route, hire their own protection, or pay the US military to do so...Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. But we are not dealing with normal, emotionally stable people. In real life we have to deal with congress. livendive 8 #68 January 30, 2012 Quote Quote Yep, it's a good start. Hopefully we can balance the budget with only military cuts. Next time someone get kidnapped by Somali pirates, they can rescue them selves....... But hey, not to worry, gov't employees will get a small pay raise... Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama will propose a 0.5 percent pay increase for civilian federal employees in his fiscal 2013 budget, according to an administration official. I work for a contractor to the government. Our pay has been frozen three of the past four years and my multi-contractor project has reduced its staff by nearly 60% (I'm the only surviving member of the work group I've been in the last 3 years). My commute has changed from 12 miles daily to 72 miles in order to reduce office costs. If the raise is only 0.5%, I really don't care whether I get it, but either way, it's not like we're just riding the gravy train express, getting fat on your taxes. There are real people at the end of those budgets, trying to do more work, for less money, with fewer resources. I'm not going to get too worked up over the military having to shoulder a 1.5% budget cut. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" matthewcline 0 #69 January 30, 2012 There is waste to lose. It also requires looking at "entitlements" and "perks". But, for example, there would be millions a quarter saved if they revamped the TDY (Temporary Duty) regulations when it comes to food. Pay a COLA for the difference between the persons home station and Temp assignment and there is ~$30 a person per day saved. Have all fours Services use the same Camo uniforms (Again) and same color "accessories" (Again) it worked for 200+ years why, not now? Cut the Coast Guard to Search and Rescue of US Waters. All their weapons can be reused by the DOD, FED LEO's. Use VTC for all meetings that are not Ultra Sensitive, or are not a "hearing" on the Hill. In the US all higher ups can fly Commercial with a small Protection Detail (If Warranted). No need to keep fueling 727's for one dude and his staff to go play golf and meet with a few guys for an hour. Put more Contracts on place for things like Information management and production. Put the contracts out for the cost the GOV currently does it MINUS the Benefits for staff. There is plenty of waste to cut. But getting the ideas up to the top fellow, usually gets trashed by a person who benefits personally from the current set up. MattAn Instructors first concern is student safety.
