billvon 3,132 #1 January 3, 2012 Who was it who was saying just a few weeks ago that the GOP didn't have time to field another frontrunner? Well here we go again: =============================== Santorum sends Iowa caucus rivals scrambling Down to the wire in Iowa DES MOINES | Mon Jan 2, 2012 6:52pm EST (Reuters) - With time running out, rivals of surging Republican Rick Santorum raised doubts about his conservative record on Monday in hopes of heading off a last-minute victory by the former senator a day before Iowa kicks off the 2012 presidential election season. Santorum, a second-tier candidate until a jump in the polls last week, claimed the momentum as he and the other Republican candidates barnstormed across Iowa making final arguments and trying to bolster turnout ahead of Tuesday's Iowa caucuses. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and libertarian congressman Ron Paul are neck-and-neck in the lead in Iowa polls in the start of the fight to decide who will face Democratic President Barack Obama in next November's election. ============================== A lot of comedians will be praying tomorrow for a Santorum victory. The Newt and Cain wells are starting to run dry.

quade 4 #3 January 3, 2012 QuoteThis is just the Conservative Version of the Democrats primaries a few years ago. I don't think that's anywhere near an accurate statement. While the front runner in the Democratic party may have changed leads a couple of times, it was nothing like this silliness of raising on a pedestal, chewing up and spitting out of candidates we're seeing the Republicans going through. From what I can see, this really is unprecedented in both parties.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

I suspect John McCain might reply by pointing-out the vicious smear campaign carried out against him in the 2000 South Carolina Primary campaign. It's a testament to his personal discipline that he ever spoke to George W. Bush again after that.

quade 4 #6 January 3, 2012 QuoteMy point, each party eats it own, each time they have to put up a none incumbent candidate. Well, this is sort of true. And actually, in looking back at previous primaries, I have to take back what I had said that this amount is unprecedented. Actually, this has happened before. The last time it happened for the Republicans was for 1964 with Goldwater and 2003 for Kerry on the Democratic side. What's interesting, now that I look at it in more detail, it never seems to be a very good thing for whatever party has been chewing through possibilities.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
kelpdiver 2 #7 January 3, 2012 QuoteWho was it who was saying just a few weeks ago that the GOP didn't have time to field another frontrunner? well, the polls I saw only had him up to 3rd, well behind Paul and Romney. One can place 3rd there and still have a shot, but I think the odds are better if you're a Democrat as there are fewer winner take all primaries in the weeks to come. I wonder if he'll complain to Google again.

I think a perfectly neutral, objective political historian would disagree that this level of vetting did not occur in the Dem field during the 2008 primary season. Both Hillary and Obama were subject to such microscopic scrutiny that you could have accurately Google-mapped the insides of their rectums. Hey, what are you doing at the keyboard? Go vote! rehmwa 2 #11 January 3, 2012 OK - Now we're back to what the parties represent. Count on Iowa to always pick a religious panderer on the R side and the socialist weirdo on the D side. Candidates that are socially extreme are fiscal SPENDERS. We need this religious right panderer about as much as we need Obama. Two sides of the same tax and borrow and spend spend spend coin. If the GOP actually ends up with this election's version of church lady (Bachmann or Santorum) then we all deserve Ospender for another 4. Fortunately, Iowa is terrible in predicting the winner - they picked 'churchy' last time - and this time he's only third (and she's dead last). Though I am encouraged with RP's support so far - that's very unexpected. ... I recently read "Game Change" and "Known and Unknown" and am working through "Decision Points". "Seeing" the process from the "inside" makes me like it even less. It is all sorts of fucked up the way that each Candidates Campaign handles the others, as well as their own Candidate. Very little, is any, consideration is given for the Country or its Citizens.
