I'm not sure if that's always the case. When same-sex marriage was legalized here, the emancipation of gays was complete, but there was no whiny PC-nonsense afterwards. I'm going to disagree with you here on one point: the repeal of DADT was not done before the rest of society (and even federal government institutions) accepted same-sex couples. The military was actually the last (or one of the last -- can't think of another off the top of my head) institution where this discrimination was so openly practiced. Even the State department gives same-sex partners of its foreign service officers the same benefits of hetero spouses -- posted together, housing, travel, health care, etc. Military still does not do this, and falls back on federal law (DOMA) to deny these benefits.

I do agree with you that perhaps the next obstacle (e.g. non-recognition of a same-sex marriage in all US states & territories) may be weakened with the implementation of this repeal. However, if acceptance of same-sex marriages and subsequent extension of benefits in other federal agencies has not yet made an impact, then that weakening may only be slight.

True - it's different Nationally and culturally - I've often thought that countries like Sweden and The Netherlands as more progressive in these matters and less burden by the cancer of political correctness that ham-strings the U.K and USofA.

Ah, that's where we disagree, then. I have never heard any gay person say "I am no different than anyone else." I have a great many say "we should be treated like everyone else, with the same rights as everyone else."

You have no idea! My gay friend dragged me kicking and screaming to the gay pride parade this past year. He had VIP tickets to this pool party, I was the ONLY OTHER STRAIGHT GUY THERE! IT WAS EPIC!
Sure compared to the gay guys I was a fat mess! Poorly dressed and rocking the keg and not the required 12 pack.....BUT....simple supply and demand....made picking up fruit flies easy!

When I was in college (early 60's) I was just 19 and pledged a fraternity. We pledges were told to choose a 'big brother'. One of the seniors, a real sharp dresser and 4.0 grade average was the apparent choice. Since I had trouble getting 'C's', I chose Pete. Noone said anything about my choice and I had absolutely no idea he was gay. I was just green as grass! The guy was a complete gentleman around me but he really had an 'in' with the girls. I'd tell him who I was interested in and the next thing I knew... I had a date with that particular girl! The guy was a taskmaster when it came to studies and my grades improved. My folks thought he was the neatest thing since radio. Pete graduated that Spring and moved-off with his guy friend. My dating hit rock bottom after that.
