Prism Break: Seeing Beyond the Shadows on the Walls Around Us

Social movements, when broadly construed and successfully applied, serve as something akin to elaborate filters. By holding a mirror up to society, a movement causes us to reconsider basic assumptions and structural processes that often exist invisibly yet pervasively in our collective midst. Social movement activities render such practices visible, and subject them to scrutiny in a manner that can become contagious in its breadth and depth alike. Movements make us question those things that we take for granted, assume are unchangeable, or benefit from without repercussions.

In this sense, a movement acts like a lens that sharpens and clarifies the reality we observe and participate in, making the strange familiar and the familiar strange all at once. When this movement consciousness begins to “go viral” and infuse the larger culture itself -- as we have seen with Occupy -- it has the initial effect of breaking down the facade of “consensus reality” that subsumes a great deal of “normal life” without much investigation or contestation. A viral movement perspective, in short, begins to erode the virtual prism that envelops the larger part of our daily existence.

Bullshit. A movement CAN do that. Or, a movement can succeed in further confusing and obfuscating. In fact, it is often obfuscation that is the TOOL.

I hate to break this to you, but “thought” and “bandwagon” don’t go together well. OWS was a bandwagon movement. I like “viral” – for it is what it is, a lifeless for that self replicates and sucks the life out of all parasitic hosts to whom it managed to attach, ultimately fought back when sensible strategies of vector control were used.

that subsumes a great deal of “normal life” without much investigation or contestation.

Interestingly, there was little investigation of contestation in the OWS crowd. Indeed, all dissent was to be stamped out in the name of unity to the outside world. OWS doesn’t meet anything you say.

Reply] viral movement perspective, in short, begins to erode the virtual prism that envelops the larger part of our daily existence.

That is until subjective feelings are overcome with rational logic. Hence, the OWS movement died out when people finally started asking, “Um. What’s the goal here?”

Viral movements are bandwagons, and there is simply nothing about a bandwagon that is based upon deliberation. Deliberate and you’ll miss it! Act Now! Don’t delay! Viral movements, to be effective, DEMAND that thought processes are not applied.

Nonsense -

Don't you realize that one Mob with serious and unfocused feelings is a way to clear yourself from the other mob movements.

You need to decide - what herd do you want to be sheep in?

OWS - like sheep, only not as smart and with a shorter attention span

for the children

of union thugs

So, is this article an attempt to take the macro or micro view of OWS? As a macro view, the article seems to be inferring that OWS is a fraud. If in a micro view, then OWS is a self deluding entity that will erode and disintegrate.
Pontification ( big word usage) without purpose is usually decried as elitist self promotion, even in academia.

If "reality" comes via consensus, that's problem number 1.

Problem 2 - if their attempts at building their own reality cannot be sustained, but can hold out a few weeks, then regroup, then a few more weeks, then regroup, then a bit more, then regroup, then there is a problem. Reality is what we are in, and not what we want it to be. That's called "fantasy."

Problem 3 - you and I can agree to disagree on the desire of social engineering. But to that end, you're no different from a bible thumper who wants the new reality to be noninclusive of gays.

TThe .001 percent went back home. The fundamental problem with the OWS movement is that there was no money in it. It was fun while it lasted, but now there's the whole hangover thing. Sure, they didn't spend much money, except on drugs and bail. But they didn't make any, either.

I'm personally looking for some plaintiffs who were OWS protesters so I can sue the organizers and supporters to get wages, rest and break periods paid for. Why weren't those protesters paid to be there? (I know from speaking to some that a few were given meals to be there by a couple of local unions. Unions - what cheap ass motherfuckers)
