It's why we have so many flavors of the same basic religion.

I'm sorry, but this is simply not true. Buddhism isn't "another flavour" of Christianity or visa versa. Both are two completely different religions.

Maybe you missed the key word.

I really can appreciate it if people try to create unity, but in the area of religion such unity simply doesn't exist. That's why religion/politics/nationalities/ancestry/geography/and others is the source of so much hatred.

I disagree to a point

Radicalized religion is the problem, not religion

And I take it one step farther....

It's not religion...it's the bozos interpreting it.
It's why we have so many flavors of the same basic religion.

Two posts in a row that I agree with you

And the next bloody nose will be Israel's. Since everyone has justification I guess that's fine.

No, I don't think so. Buddhism and Christianity are two completely different things that both happen to be a religion and have some similarities when one looks at the details. It's even better visible if you compare the Aztec religion and Jainism with each other. Both aren't based on the same foundations.

No, But I blame religion for a lot of BS. Or more precise some religions. Jainism for instance isn't very useful when you have to justify atrocities, but Islam certainly is. Just read the quran, it's very clear about that.

Yes, but they are not the same (key word) religion.
I think Pops is talking about, for example, Christianity having different flavors like Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Baptist, Southern Baptist, 10th St. Baptist, East 10th St. Baptist, 9th St. Baptist, Main St. Baptist, New Beginning Interfaith Baptist, Eastern Orthodox, Pentecostal, Evangelical, Methodist, ..., Anglican, Episcopal, Adventist, Coptic, ..., (take a breath), Assembly of God, Church of Christ, Nazarene, etc., etc., ....all the same religion.

I thought pops was referring to one basic religion on which all religions are based, but that makes a lot more sense.

Of course (just to keep things easy and avoid discussions about interpretation :P ) I split Christians in two groups: True Christian TM, who are cover2cover believers, and heretics. What a True Christian TM exactly isn't that easy to establish due to conflicting texts in the bible, but I reckon they're a lot like the fictive Landover Babtist Church crowd. Or in other words: If you aren't a total bigot, you're probably not a good Christian.

I've read the quran, And while it's hard to concentrate on something that's hardly coherent and boring as hell, it's rather clear that violence is one of the cornerstones of that religion.

Sounds like you have something in common with the bozos.

An organization associated with al-Qaida claimed responsibility for firing the rockets.

The IDF said it held the Lebanese government responsible for the attacks and that it needed to take action to prevent future rocket fire. Home Front Defense Minister Matan Vilna’i said that “the Lebanese government is responsible for everything that happens in Lebanon and everything that leaves its borders.”

I see no problem here.
If you are only considering that the return fire came from Israel, as opposed to any other country, then I'd have to point out your hypocrisy.

Hmmmmm....Suppose Cuban anti-American revolutionaries fire rockets into Miami. What's your response?

a) complain to the UN
b) complain to Castro
c) lob a rocket back
d) cry and whine
e) pepper spray 'em
f) all of the above
g) other

Me?
"Get set up, men! We're have live-fire target practice today!"

Well, I think that each of the varieties of Christians thinks that all the others are going to hell.

Not really, You don't have to be very intelligent to conclude that certain religions are violence orientated.

Just remember:
~Never take a Baptist fishing with you. ...He'll drink all your beer! If you must, be sure to take two Baptists with you ...neither will drink any!~

This is a fine saying. I have personal experience with this....

A few years ago ( 2004 - 2005 ) I was travelling and basejumping in Europe, only to meet a very well known and quite eccentric " UTAH " based jumper....;)

He was without a doubt one of the biggest animals I have EVER partied with, and was constantly recounting stories of hedonism beyond hedonism...

While twitching like a reformed coke addict, and ranting over multiple beers, my now late partner in crime Paul whipped out his camera and announced he wanted a souvenir shot... well, all of a sudden the " UTAH " jumper " jumped " under the table and announced :

" PUT THE CAMERA AWAY !!!! "

We were at a loss... He later explained that if he was even IN A PHOTO containing a picture of someone ELSE drinking a beer ( let alone him ) he would be excommunicated from his imaginary friend club in Utah.

That was without a doubt one of the strangest moments of my life. talk about living 2 different lives!!!!!:P

In contrast to popular believe the bible isn't all that hard to interpret and understand. Many Christians claim it is that way to dodge questions about the questionable texts in the bible. I reckon they've also trouble to reconcile those texts with their idea of a good and loving god. But if you read the book with an open mind you'll see that that good and loving god doesn't exist. You should have taken the hint when he murdered the ecosystem with the Great Flood.

You find that the *New* Testament is just that.

You should really read the NT. Loads of bigotry and hatred in there too. Not nearly as bad as the OT, but still bad. I think you really mean the 4 evangelies when you refer to the NT. Yeah, those books are odd exceptions and do conflict with the general tone of the bible.

I make assumptions based on what you say. And of course you wouldn't be the first Christian that's clueless about his own religion.

So, being the penultimate Biblical scholar that you are, you're familiar with Jeremiah 31:29-31, yes?

Looks like you're even more clueless than you claim other to be.

Okay, I'll bite: the new covenant seems to be a good cop out for Christians at first glance, but while it (for example) can be used as an excuse to not kill wiccans, people that work on Saturdays, obnoxious teens, adulterers and homos, that doesn't mean that killing those people is immoral. It only means that killing people that wiccans, people that work on Saturdays, obnoxious teens, adulterers and homos is the right thing under certain circumstances.

And since you don't have to kill to qualify as a bigot, you still have to be a bigot to be a good Christian. You also have to accept all other things that God did or God ordered. Genocide for instance.

Wrong again.

It *is* fun seeing what your preconceptions lead you to believe from your supposedly "open-minded" reading of the Bible, though.

That one came from a guy that confused dislike/hatred for religion with a dislike/hatred for ethnicity. Also your post has a complete lack of counter arguments.
