Arrhenius was the first to point out CO2's impact: "On The Influence of Carbonic Acid in the Air upon the Temperature of the Ground", April, 1896, The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science 5th Series, Vol 41, no. 251. Seems like any molecule that doesn't have the same atoms in it (e.g. O2) will have an impact due to their dipole moment. Haven't read anything refining the magnitude of the impact of a doubling of CO2. Arrhenius predicted about 11 degrees, but that's been widely revised.
