Barney Franks Seat to Open Up.

Recommended Posts

I can’t help but think that he is following Chris Dodd in realizing his name attached to the Wall Street Bailout bill likely ended his political career. Still, while I disagreed with much – if not most – of Barney Frank’s political positions and even actions, I have a very large amount of respect for the man.

He co-sponsored a bill that may have ended his political career because he thought it was the right thing to do. We NEED more legislators who are willing to commit political suicide by doing what they think it right. I disagree wholeheartedly with the Dodd-Frank but hey, he thought it necessary despite the long-term personal consequences.

The biggest thing that is held against him is that scandal where the male prostitute was living with him – and even being paid by him. I actually viewed his whole handling of the issue as one that spoke of integrity. He did NOT know about the whole prostitution ring. When word came out he did NOT cover it up but actually self reported it and got an investigation rolling on himself. Then he did the unspeakable – he went to his district and opened up for questioning and answered questioned without evasion.

Say what one will about Barney Frank’s politics. Yes – I disagree with them. But Barney Frank the man long ago earned my respect. I absolutely wish him the best.

Lots of explanations less nefarious that you imply.

"There are other things I'd like to do in my life before my career is over," he said, referencing an uncompleted doctoral dissertation at Harvard University.

He's 71, Congress stopped working together in the mid 90s. It can't be fun banging your head against the wall for 15 years. I can think of a million reasons to get out of that arena to do something else.

Is that the sound of a huge WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOSH... we are all hearing???:ph34r::ph34r:

Not unless it's Barney bending over in the shower. I thought Rehm's post was funny.

Maybe he thinks his chances are better at Penn State.

One thing I really like about you is your ability to look past someone's politics. "Agrees with Jerry" isn't a prerequisite for respect, liking, or the ability to say something good about someone.

Yep, that's my thinking, too. The age-70s decade is a real transformer, heath-wise. I've watched a lot of very vibrant, active 71 year olds lose a great deal of their health (or die) by the time they're 78 or 79. So at age 71, after a lifetime of constant work, battles and public scrutiny and derision of his personal life , the window of opportunity to get out and really enjoy a few healthy years of retirement, while he still can, is now.

I guess I would wish him good riddance.

I find it hard to respect someone who, used the power of his office to, write letters on House stationary to lobby a felon’s parole officer (the felon was his live in boyfriend) while this same boyfriend ran a male prostitute operation out of Mr. Franks House apartment.

Ya, better this one is finally gone

As for the timing?

Well, he is 72 years old and has 32 years in the House? No matter who, you gotta think it is time to retire
