winsor 236 #26 November 24, 2011 Quote Now this is funny Hitting the web all over the place http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vmz3b9yrdsM It got yanked before I could check it out. IIRC, at least when I was in Russia, the Russian equivalent to our "bird" is a gesture using the index and middle finger. It was stressed that one should not flash a "peace sign" for fear of it being interpreted as some kind of backwards version. I really would not worry about it - unless the Russians follow the American practice where disapproval of the leader of a sovereign nation is shown by invading their country and executing said leader. We do not set a particularly good example. BSBD, Winsor
mnealtx 0 #27 November 25, 2011 QuoteQuoteIt would be interesting to know what she was saying but in the end it makes little difference to me I was able to forward this video to a friend who speaks some Russian. My friend says the commentary is short on details because it cuts away, but it appears that the TV commentator is flipping Obama the bird because of a military base ... which goes back to what I originally speculated on ... Obama's plans to create a permanent US naval base in Australia. I was under the assumption this new naval base was more to counteract the Chinese influence in the area. But the Russians do have a presence in the Pacific. I think your friend might be mistaken: "Limanova was reading a report on the Asian-Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) summit held in Hawaii earlier this month when she noted that Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's president, had taken up its rotating presidency. "Before, this post was held by Barack Obama," she read, before looking up at the camera, lowering her eyes again and raising her middle finger."Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. CanuckInUSA 0 #28 November 25, 2011 I am the one who speculated it was related to the new Australian naval base. My friend only said something about a military base. Either way, everywhere you look the video has been pulled YouTube. Someone is doing some censoring. mnealtx 0 #29 November 25, 2011 From The Australian: QuoteAt the AusMIN talks between Australian and US defence and foreign affairs ministers in Melbourne last year, the two governments agreed to a stronger US military presence in Australia, with US forces to share bases and store equipment here. US forces would not establish new bases but they would be welcomed into existing facilities with the less politically risky formula of being given unfettered access to "places, not bases".Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. CanuckInUSA 0 #30 November 25, 2011 As I said, all references to the US naval base in Australia was pure speculation on my part and it appears that my speculation turned out to be incorrect. If you believe the official explanation, "The Bird" was directed to a member of the off camera Russian REN-TV crew and Ms Limanova has apparently been sent to the penalty box for her misconduct. http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/11/25/russian-newscaster-pulled-from-tv-after-middle-finger-during-obama-story/ Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
