Anger at Walmart heiress's $1.4bn gallery

When Alice Walton, heiress to the Walmart supermarket fortune and the the 10th richest woman in the United States, opened a spectacular fine art museum in her home town, she might have expected plaudits and gratitude. It hasn't quite worked out that way.

The long-awaited opening of the Crystal Bridges Museum for American Art in Walton's home town of Bentonville, Arkansas, has provoked mixed reactions. Some have celebrated the unveiling of a significant new private art institution, but many have criticised the decision to spend $1.4bn of company and family foundation money as the retail colossus cuts back its workers' benefits.

Protesters at the museum have informally joined forces with the Occupy Wall Street camps across the US and point to growing ties between the Occupy movement and established trade unions.

I live down the road from the museum and the only disapproval I have seen has been that which has been sought out by the media.

I've been to the museum and it is an extraordinary gift.

I say this as a former disgruntled Wal-Mart associate. You know what I did to protest? I quit and went to work somewhere else.

And now she's even worse:

After an abortive and embarrassing opening for Alice Walton's fine art museum, the Wal-Mart heiress has decided to close the exhibit after the current series of showings has ended.

Walton, the 10th richest woman in the United States, opened the Crystal Bridges museum on November 11, 2011. Within two days of its opening it was drawing criticism from activists as an unnecessary waste of money during a time of economic uncertainty. As a result of the protests, Walton decided to close the museum after the current series of planned exhibits has been completed.

The closing has generated negative reactions from the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations and local employee unions.

"We are disappointed that Mrs. Walton chose to close down a museum and put dozens of people out of work just to save a little money," said Mildred Banks, president of the Bentonville Labor Association. "Rich people like Mrs. Walton clearly have no idea what people on the streets are going through."

My step grandfather was alive during the great depression.
He would tell me stories about how those who had lost their jobs would sit and wait until those who had money would ride by in their horse and buggy and all of a sudden they would sun out and stab the horse.
Well apparently that use to scare the shit out of the very well to do and they left NYC for upstate NY where the population was more subdued and well let's be honest slightly dumber.
It's funny though how history repeats it self, how was US in the early part of the 1900's?
And how is it now?
Remember the robber barons?
I don't think any one will be killing any horses any time soon...these occupy folks are freaking vegan causies who not only lack any coherent thoughts but are incapable of forming a coherent unified message...but I'm willing to bet the entity that evolves from this pile of hipster shit will be an interesting force. And I highly doubt it will be peaceful.
And I think they will have two targets in their sights.
one will be the Teaparty since it represents the Republican party...yeah yeah yeah you got guns....but well they can wipe out your gun fund with one internet worm. Shot that!
And the very well to do.

Should be interesting.
Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay.

The only thing that falls from the sky is birdshit and fools!

Yep. It happened in Italy not too long ago. After decades of corruption a new party arose, one that supported "freedom, the individual, family, enterprise, tradition and love for weaker people." They announced their intention to combat fiscal, judicial and bureaucratic oppression of Italians, and promised an end to the bickering and the scandals that plagued the other mainstream political parties of the time. This new entity, the Forza party, was to be a party of the people; a million new jobs were promised to low and middle income voters.

The result, of course, was Berlusconi.

Weird that people are so jealous to the point of violent hatred

Get off your jealous asses and make your own money.

Who cares if she did or didn't make her money. It's hers to do with what she wants.

No attachment, just overwhelming agreement.

My bad. . .

Got it.

your point and your source...

The point is, what do you want?

First they are upset because she opened the gallery to flaunt her wealth, so they protest.

Them she closes the gallery and they are upset because now the people that were working are without job.

This is the problem people have with the OWS crew. No coherent message.

Let's keep it simple to start out with and we will get more complicated after this. Do they want the gallery open or closed?

Where did you find this? I live here and you can't open a paper or turn on the news without hearing about the museum, but I have not heard this. I have also never heard of the "Bentonville Labor Association."

Again, it's HER money. She can do with it as she pleases.

Your jealousy is palpable. You want other people's money, money they don't want to give you, and you want the Government to be the delivery boy...

So would you also tax money inherited by a widow?

Would you tax the transfer of a business to someone's son or daughter?
