wmw999 2,588 #1 November 13, 2011 In evaluating a political candidate, are you more interested in what he or she is for, or what he or she is against? How do you see your own views -- as being for something, or being against what you see is wrong? Just curious. Any moron can point out problems, but the key, as Richard Pryor was advised, is "What you gonna do?" As a cynic, I am distrustful of people who share goals in common with mine, but have a naive view of their fellow man when formulating a plan to achieve these goals. Rather than bitching about greed and corruption (and expecting them to go away), figuring out how to harness these nasty realities is a more realistic approach to actually achieving something. Don't get me wrong, I am impressed with the likes of the Bagwan Sri Rajneesh, who convinced his followers that poverty was a good thing, and used all their worldly goods (that they donated to him) to keep in hot and cold running cuties and to keep his Rolls Royce collection. Against is easy but meaningless. "This is BAD!" Okay, and...? To be successfully for something requires some idea of the nature of the problems you face, in order to achieve said goals. Kennedy 0 #3 November 13, 2011 Spot on, winsor. Anyone can complain about problems. Solutions is a much tougher business. That's why I tend to have no respect for protestors but I'm willing to listen to campaigners and producers. Sign carrying marching whiners don't accomplish much. Being against greed, or gun violence, or abortion, or racism, or whatever doesn't accomplish anything. Being for fair application of the legal system, limiting monetary influence in political elections, an informed population to prevent unwanted pregnancies and a healthy home for infants, equal access and protection under the law, etc is much more productive.witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
wmw999 2,588 #4 November 13, 2011 I'm also in agreement. I just seem to see so many things written that are all about what or who is wrong, rather than how to make it right (other than a fairly broad "everything will be better if we get rid of X") For gives you a goal. Against gives you a range of directions, from which you have to pick one. And then you still don't really know what your goal is. quade 4 #6 November 14, 2011 Quotewhats in the person's heart that forms those decisions is also important..you know, his character. What is in a person's "heart" is unknowable. Character is what a person has when nobody is looking, somebody is -always- looking at a politician and most of them can be pretty good actors when it comes to appearing as if. It doesn't really matter how much you believe what a person says they're going to do. It's what they actually do that matters. We see this all the time on Capital Hill. A person says they're for something, but their voting record shows the complete opposite or they say their for family values and get arrested in an airport bathroom for soliciting sex.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
