Wealth redistribution has steadily moved wealth away from the middle class and to the very rich over the past 30 years

Wealth redistribution has moved money away from the middle class AND the rich to the poor. The problem is that the rich are better able to sustain the loss and adjust. The poor and middle class are not.

.

Nope. The rich got richer and the poor poorer over the past 30 years.
www.nytimes.com/2011/09/15/us/poor-are-still-getting-poorer-but-downturns-punch-varies-census-data-show.html

And? So it's now incumbent upon Government to take from those who have EARNED it, and give it to those who have not?

What's mine is mine, not yours.

Yet another strawman from a right winger. I haven't asked you for anything. Have you been taking debating lessons from mnealtx?

Not a strawman. A Question.

Sir: Given your disdain for the rich, Is it your opinion that it is incumbent on Govt to take from those who have it earned it, and give to those who have not?

A simple yes or no would do, and if you wish, a bit of clarification would be nice also.

Sir: Given your disdain for the rich,

Argument based on false premise, therefore moot.

Stating "The rich got richer and the poor poorer over the past 30 years." is a statement of fact, and not correlated in any way with disdain. I realize that as an attorney you are paid to ignore logic and appeal to emotion.

Ok, distilled once more, and this now borders on being pedantic:

Is it your opinion that it is incumbent on Govt to take from those who have it earned it, and give to those who have not?

The government is authorized by the Constitution to levy taxes on you. It is authorized to disburse those revenues according to the dictates of Congress.

Claiming that what's yours is yours won't hold up very well with the IRS, Counselor.

I'm not arguing law, Professor. If I was, I'd cite cases and statutes. We're debating fiscal/political theory. If it was the former, I'd bet my JD and AZ license against your Physics PhD...and I'd win.

My question still stands.

Try withholding your taxes on the grounds that what's yours is yours; the IRS has good attorneys too.

It is my opinion that they are authorized to do this. However, rewarding AIG executives with huge bonuses after the bail out seemed a pretty bad idea to me, since they really weren't have nots at all.

The rich got richer and the poor poorer over the past 30 years.

The middle class got poorer.

This DESPITE the massive amount of money that has gone to the poor. This is DESPITE the massive growth of entitlement spending that has directed tens of trillions to the welfare state.

Here's a concept: "Taking wealth from one does not create wealth for another." Another concept: "Poverty is not cured by giving it money."

And Wendy - I understand your point. But I wanted to offer an example about how redistributing wealth can act to benefit the wealthy to the detriment of everyone else.

Yep. That pesky Constitution again. I have the distinct feeling that right wingers would be a lot happier if it just quietly went away. (Except for the Second Amendment of course.)

I'd be interested to read the case law where someone successfully argued with the IRS that they didn't have to pay taxes because "what's mine is mine, not yours".

There's a caveat to this that old Ben didn't think of

Ben had it figured-out well enough. Many Americans support only the candidates who will promise the lowest (or zero) tax rate, so they are effectively voting themselves money in that they can keep more of it. Of course the result is a dis-incentive to vote for fiscal responsibility as you describe.

The repubiclowns have bee performing that for 30 years now.. Even George HW Bush called it what it was... VOODOO Economics... and here we are.. they cut the taxes... and there has been ZERO fiscal responsibility by the Party of NO from Jan 1981 till now. Sure.. cut revenues... and take us to war after war after war.. and feeding what does come in to the people who bought and paid them and the rubes are still looking for their trickle.... while the REAL money has GUSHED to the top.

Unless you are a multi-millionaire... if you voted for any small government fiscal responsibility repubiclowns.. you are the ones who are getting fooled over and over and over.... SHAME ON YOU.
