>Huh. I didn't realize that was a continent.

Careful there. You might get called one of them out-of-touch ivory tower academics who spends all their time studying meaningless geography stuff! You have to get out of your cloister there and live on Main Street in countries like North Dakota.

At least he can get there on the intercontinental railroad.

I hear that on a clear day you can see Asia from Sarah Palin's backyard.

Michele Bachmann, always good for a laugh: "Obama put us in Libya and now he's putting us into Africa."

The forces aren't going to a specific country - it was generally written as "Central Africa" rather than list the nations involved. So I don't think this is a high on the list for her gaffes.

Didn't see where she said Libya was a continent...of course, taking the quote for what it actually SAYS instead of what you can twist it into takes away the opportunity for the cheap shot.

That wasn't really the issue anyway. The issue is that she, apparently along with some of her supporters, doesn't realize that Libya is part of Africa.

Parse her words any way you'd like, her lack of knowledge of basic geography and international events is sorely lacking.

No, the issue was getting the cheap shot. There was nothing in the quote given to support that it was about geography instead of military campaigns.

You think that? Really?

Here's the quote;
"Obama put us in Libya and now he's putting us into Africa."

You're right, it wasn't a geography lesson FROM her, it was one ABOUT her lack of geographical knowledge. If a person is going to spout off the names of places, they really ought to at least know what continent they're on.

She may well be unaware, but I cannot conclude it from the quote. As I wrote, reporting was a bit poor on the subject. I'm not sure if they did it because it was easier, or if they thought readers didn't know where Uganda was. Looking back at it now, most don't even list "central," just say Africa. She then repeats it.

Oh, of course!! I'm sure it was just a HUGE COINCIDENCE that she happened to mention the two places that Obama has/will be sending troops to.

Wonder if he'll bother getting Congressional approval for the use of force on this one, or just do it illegally like Libya?

Maybe someone should just ask her for an off-the-cuff definition of "superset."

If the words "really cool" or "chic" appear in the answer, then we really know she doesn't understand :ph34r:

Really?
***President Obama missed a legal deadline Friday — set in a 1973 law — that required him to obtain congressional approval for U.S. military operations in Libya.

Friday was the 60th day since Obama formally notified Congress that U.S. planes would strike targets in Libya, a bid to protect civilians from the government of strongman Moammar Gaddafi. Under the Nixon-era War Powers Resolution, the president must obtain congressional authorization of military action within 60 days or else begin withdrawing forces.

They don't have to be "in" Libya. I refer you to section 4(a)2 of the War Powers Act, below:

***SEC. 4. (a) In the absence of a declaration of war, in any case in which United States Armed Forces are introduced--

(1) into hostilities or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances;

(2) into the territory, airspace or waters of a foreign nation, while equipped for combat, except for deployments which relate solely to supply, replacement, repair, or training of such forces; or

(3) in numbers which substantially enlarge United States Armed Forces equipped for combat already located in a foreign nation;

Kinda hard to withdraw people that aren't there.

Good thing that being in-country isn't a requirement of the WPA, then.
