Don't wear a shiny shirt to the airport

nice... more stories about an agency with powers inflated beyond the intended, and with an effectiveness on par with that expected from any generic government agency.

unfortunately I occasionally have to travel for work, I'm too familiar with the process described towards the end of the article.

I'm no TSA fan (I received an "enhanced pat down" two days ago by someone who didn't strike my fancy) but the author of this article strikes me as an idiot. The shiny shirt didn't flummox anyone. It sounds like the TSA employees (I've decided I don't like calling them agents) knew the limitations of the gear and did what they had to do to work around that.

...when a full container of BedHead Manipulator Sculpting Putty was removed from my bag and seized as contraband. This product had cost me just under $20 at the Ulta Salon in Silver Spring, and I had barely used it. I’ll admit that it had a suspicious appearance — a cobalt blue color and a thick, goopy texture — but no one was going to mistake it for a container of ammonium nitrate.

I found that I had an easier time with the Garnier Fructis line, usually bought for less than $3 an item at the local CVS. I once made it through security in Greenville, S.C., with a mostly used five-ounce jar of styling paste. The forgiving agent warned me that while the jar violated regulations, he would make an exception since the container was nearly empty. This confounded me: Did they really think that a full five-ounce jar of styling putty posed a more ominous risk, as if the putty itself were explosive?

If the putty was an explosive, yes, a full five ounce jar would pose a more ominous risk than a nearly empty jar. That's not rocket surgery.

Crappy arguments against things that are bad are worse than good arguments in favor of things that are bad.

It looks like the TSA thought he might be a nutter. That being the case, fuck him. He has no rights.

Put him in a hospital, by no means let him have access to weapons and keep him there.

Glad you agree with this action, John. I'm sure that if you interviewed everyone who knows or has known him there will be at least a few who think he might have had some psychological disorder.

Welll done, TSA! Protecting the public from him and him from himself. The nutter...

My wife is hotter than your wife.
