neutrinos exceed the speed of light.

So why is this in SC?

Here, let me make it official, if you believe in the speed of light, the Doppler effect and sub-atomic particles, then you also probably have to believe the book of Genesis is nothing more than mythology. If you believe the book of Genesis is mythology, then why on Earth would you believe anything else in the Bible is the literal truth?

No, That wasn't the question. The original post had no religious overtones to it and had no obvious reason to be in SC.

I mean it's more than obvious the all religions are mere mythology, but I didn't get that from the vibe of the initial thread post.

Way to go and completly ruin a benign debate about a scientific matter. And by the way...your ASSumptions not only make you look like a total jackass, but completly confirms it.

It's premature to make that statement. Much more work would need to be done to confirm that.

nah, we got enough evidence to convict. Let's try it in Texas so we can be sure to get a death sentence.

Why would that be so difficult for you to understand that there can be people who not only believe in science, but endorse the benefits science brings. And NOT be an atheist?

Cognitive dissonance? Explains a lot when dealing with the intersection of science and religion.

neutrinos are funny things it was only a few years ago that they were supposed to be point particles with no mass. there was speculation then that they could travel faster than light (as i understand it you cannot accelerate anything to the speed of light - but if it was already travelling faster than the speed of light originally then that may be possible). a faster than light neutrino could be the same as a neutrino going backwards in time. or not :)

A Neutrino sounds like it might be manufactured by Fiat. "My Neutrino goes faster than the speed of light," has a nice ring to it!

Yeah, and Lucas equipped cars are faster than the speed of darkness.

Scientists are still trying to understand the physics behind the darkon particle emitted by Lucas headlamps and responsible for the missing mass of the universe. I think maybe they are overlooking the possibility of an elusive Lucas darkino that carries away the energy from the car battery while being otherwise undetectable.

Hmmmm! You might be on to something there. Maybe the darkino has something to do with the "magic smoke" that is sometimes seen to be emanating randomly from various components thereby causing the darkon emission. I'd like to see a Feynman diagram of that process. Also, it was Heisenberg who came up with the "uncertainty principle" but it was Lucas who brought the idea to market with their "flicker" position on their switches.

Just a question - Is it the claim that the neutrinos exceeded the vacuum speed of light, c? Or did they exceed the speed of light through air or some other medium that would have slowed "light" but would have had no effect on the speed of the neutrinos? I would think that the "precise" measurement of the distance between emitter and detector would have had to have used some process that involved radio or other "photon-based" devices, including GPS, etc. How about local gravitational fields that might have more interaction with light than it does with neutrinos? My point is that there are a lot of things to take into consideration, given the 730 km distance. Any mistake or omission in the distance measurement could account for the "observed" speed. This experiment definitely needs to be reproduced by an independent team at a different location.

Neutrinos are the Honey Badger of sub-atomic particles; vacuum, solid granite, they don't give a shit.

That's why most of the really "good" neutrino experiments are done deep underground, like at Sudbury, that way you can be sure it's neutrinos that are being detected and not some other form of particles or radiation.

As I stated higher up in the thread, my guess is that when push comes to shove we're going to find out some cable length hasn't been accounted for properly. Just 11 inches of cable is one nano second, which is practically an eternity at the sub-atomic level.
