Autism Linked to Atheism

I think you meant to say, "Atheism linked to autism". Yes, there's a difference.

As I said...give em a bible.

Have them in various languages - to include the original. Your point?

Neurotypicals are sheep.

I'll be sleeping warm tonight...

Because you're covered in wool?

Well, certainly has eyes are...

(I may have lost track of the analogy at some point.)

This thread sickens me...

Why? It's fun to be insensitive when discussing autism -- lots of jabs to take at the kooks who ask why it's becoming such a prevalent condition -- unless you've experienced it first hand happening to someone in your family.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

I think there are a lot of (non-autistic) people who don't necessarily believe in God/religion literally, who see God as somewhat of a metaphor, but who wouldn't go so far as to call themselves atheists (for whatever reason, perhaps because it's still a bad word in our society). But, because people with high-functioning autism tend to take language quite literally, they're not likely to say, "Yes, I believe in God," while thinking of God metaphorically.

Doesn't surprise me either. I had an Asperger's student in my class 3 years ago, very smart but quite unable to process any illogical rubbish the same way "neurotypicals" can.

I recall reading something where a person with Asperger's was having trouble with addiction, and how the traditional 12-step program was not working because of his literal interpretation of it (a program that would be non-sensical for most people if they took it literally). He ended up finding help through Rational Recovery. And I don't mean to insult 12-step programs here, but I think a lot of folks who have been helped with the program have basically "translated" the language into something less literal, which is perhaps less of an option for other people (such as those with autism).

Giving them a Bible won't do anything...

You don't know that. There may be something in scripture that speaks to them on deeper level and gives them a sense of comfort and puts them at ease, limiting the need to pump them full of antidepressants...

Good stuff...you certainly reserve the right to free speech apparently, but don't you find that ironic given the fact that you consider yourself a "somewhat observant Jew?"

I can't really think of someone more full of shit than that...

(pssst: hint, hint....name starts with a J----?)

Funny how people would deny someone the possibility of gaining a sense of comfort like that.

I don't see where preference fits into this. Surely you don't think that the autistic...............nah, you wouldn't think that....would you?

I know, right? Like what are they afraid of, eh?

If it's bullshit, they'll clearly see through it...right?

Why make the decision for them?

I can't really think...

Truer words were never spoken.

Observing family traditions such as Pesach and Purim does not mean that one expects Elijah to pop in and drain his wine glass, nor that the Magilla is historically, factually, verbatim accurate.

If someone came through the open door claiming to be Elijah, someone would dial 911 stat.

Pointing out to most Rabbis that the Book of Esther is contradicted by a wealth of contemporary accounts would elicit, at most, a shrug.

Against such overwhelming and dedicated ignorance, the suggestion to get a clue is a waste of breath at best.

You're really on the hook aren't you, old man? It's going to be fun seeing just how many subjects you're willing to make a complete tit of yourself in just so you can keep stirring shit.

Like, for example, this one.

Who said anything about denial? Butters simply said that it wouldn't help if the hypothesis quoted in the OP was correct, that autistic people are more likely to reject religious texts because they don't accept metaphors.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

it never ceases to amaze me what kind of CRAP people do come up with in studies - notably, those studies usually come from the states.. :S

Can't argue that, fo' sho'.

Just for grins, can you tell us about one from your country. Not to bash you, just would be interesting to see what kind of things other countries come up with along these lines.

I can see England doing a study that determines Cricket just ain't cricket.

That's not a jab. That's a fictional cartoon that I believe is fictional and watch for entertainment not a fictional book that I believe is non-fiction and read for ... whatever people read it for.
