Did Ron Paul just defend al Qaeda? Presidential candidate's campaign rocked by comments at GOP debate

Last updated at 7:54 AM on 13th September 2011

Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul was hushed by deafening boos from a crowd of Tea Partiers at Monday's GOP Presidential debate, after suggesting America's foreign police played a role in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Mr Paul attempted to position his argument to slash military spending, contending that occupation was the 'real motivation' behind acts of terrorism by Muslim extremists against the U.S.

But a provocative retort from presidential candidate, Pennsylvania lawmaker Rick Santorum, instead drew wide support, after he dismissed Mr Paul's comments as 'irresponsible'.

He argued that 'the attacks of 9/11 deserved a response. But the manner in which we responded has allowed radicals in the Muslim world to advance a very threatening narrative about us and our motivation in occupying their lands.'

He also argued that occupation was the 'real motivation behind the September 11 attacks and the vast majority of other instances of suicide terrorism,' writing that the U.S. would be more secure 'If we had targeted our response to only the thugs and criminals who attacked us, and refrained from invading countries that had nothing to do with it.'

'We chose a course of action that led to the further loss of 8,000 American lives, left 40,000 wounded and has hundreds of thousands seeking help at the Veterans Administration. We are three to four trillion dollars poorer. Our military is spread dangerously thin around the globe, at the expense of protection here at home,' he continued.

. . .

Mr Paul defended his stance, arguing America could save trillions of dollars if the country cut funding from wars.

The room echoed with boos and hisses, however, hushing the congressman as he justified his sympathies.

'This idea that whole Muslim world is attacking us because we’re free and prosperous, that is just not true,' he said.

How will the military industrial complex justify itself if Oceania is not at war?

Wait a minute. We just had a thread that claimed Ron Paul was the darling of the Tea Party. So which is it, darling or Devil?

He WAS the darling, until he started speaking about things that would cut off the flow of funds to the warmongers. That now makes him evil and therefore must be destroyed.

Then can we agree that this ends the claim that Ron Paul is in lock step with the Tea Party?

He wasn't defending al Queda in any way. It's really sad to see people cheering on the bullshit of Santorum and booing Ron Paul's statement [:/] It's even more sad to see that spun into an article titled "Did Ron Paul just defend al Qaeda?".

I would add it's also a pathetic attack on a man who deserves respect whether you agree with him or not.

After seeing the names you have called Obama/Pelosi/Reid etc, I have to laugh to see you demanding respect for a politician. Take a look in the mirror; you'll see others express as much respect for your favorite politicians as you show theirs.

THE point of the thread

it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Ron Paul makes far too much sense for the GOP to select him. But at least he gets some (not all) people thinking outside the box.

Dont know if I agree with this blanket statement

There are many topics where I do agree with him.

There are a few that I do not agree with him

would be the same for any nominee

If he were to becomet the canidated for the Republican party I and many others would vote for him

But as I stated before
If Elmer Fudd or Eor were the canidate, they would beat Obama

Oh . . . it's DoublePlusGood the same theme with regards to this topic.

Ron Paul has absolutely figured out the purposes behind NewSpeak the 43rd Administration used in its ramp up to Iraq.

Oh, is this like the time you falsely accused me of calling Obama stupid, only to be unable to find a single time I did so?

I imagine you will be digging through a lot of old threads tonite trying to salvage some of your integrity.

I'm sure that even if you are able to find something, it will be a bout someting they did or said, not the personal attack like you have launched on Ron Paul. I'm also sure we can find lots of examples of you calling Bush or another Republican a derogatory name. So why don't you try holding that mirror up to your own face?

Ignorant fuckwits, the lot of them. Makes holding on to any faith in the public difficult to say the least. Those morons booing Paul are the sort that wants to hear how the infidels attacked us because they hate freedom, baseball, and apple pie. The concept of a complicated and interconnected world is anathema to them.

tangent: why do folks keep referring to the tea party as if it were one solid organization with leaders and clear boundaries?

Because then they wouldn't have anything to bitch and whine about.

Because they tend to present themselves that way - as a solid voting bloc that can influence elections and set policy. Which is no surprise; they want to be seen as a solid, influential force in politics. The Tea Party Patriots (a solid organization with leaders, clear boundaries etc) claims to represent them, and claim to be the "Official Home of the Tea Party Movement.

However, I do agree that that particular label spans more than that organization, and there are people who refer to themselves as Tea Partiers who do not align with the goals of the TPP.
