Stimulus 2.0. Sounded more like a campaign speech to me.

OBAMA: "Everything in this bill will be paid for. Everything."

It most definitely will...hang on to your wallet.

It will be paid for, by stealing from our future again. The definition of insanity is repeating the same action over and over expecting different results. This president is prooving he is either stupid mor insane.

Doesn't this bill have to go through a Republican controlled Congress? Following your logic, can we then assume that if this bill passes, Republican senators and representatives have proven themselves stupid or insane?

The issue is that if the rep's stop the bill Obama and the dem's will call them job killers, attackers of the middle class, and everything else they can think of evn though it would not be true.

So, the American people would be stupid or insane for not recognizing this?

Obama did say that congress should pass this bill at least 16 times, meaning it was a weak bill and he needed to push it to much to pass it.

The puplic will be stupid if they do not realize that this is nothing more than a political tactic that is to try and save his political ass

if we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

If the majority of Americans are either stupid or insane, democracy cannot work. Maybe there should be a dictator for a little while then? Or at least suspend democracy for a bit, since obviously Americans do not know what is best for themselves?

But your standpoint is that the Republican members of Congress will allow this bill to pass, because they want to protect their own political future?

You don't think they would do what would be best for the country?

Has DC "done what is best for the country" lately? I don't think so. I don't trust either side, but I still hope the rep's will block ALL extra spending until the debt is coming down.
The reduction on SS to help pay for this bill is the stupidest thing they could do, Drilling a bigger hole in the boat doesn't stop it from sinking.

You're right. A pure democracy won't work. Maybe we should have a republic then.

they are politicians. They were elected to do what was best. In reality, they do what it takes to get re-elected.

We need fewer politicians, and more public servants.

It's so important and crucial that it must be done quickly. Sure, the last 2.5 years he has been President and sat on his thumbs and walked on his elbows on the jobs issue.

But now that 2012 Campaign season is open, it's time to put on a campaign face and hit some issues.

Note: It's not that I'm against a government doing nothing. It's just that what the government HAS been doing hasn't been too good. Either be laissez faire or do something. That the President has waffled so much between the two tells me that this is campaigning.

"That is why I have moved quickly to work with my economic team and leaders of both parties on an American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan that will immediately jump- start job creation and long-term growth."

"And this plan begins with -- this plan must begin today, a plan I am confident will save or create at least 3 million jobs over the next few years"

"Yes, we'll put people to work repairing crumbling roads, bridges and schools by eliminating the backlog of well-planned, worthy and needed infrastructure projects, but we'll also do more to retrofit America for a global economy."

"Now, I understand that some might be skeptical of this plan. Our government has already spent a good deal of money, but we haven't yet seen that translate into more jobs or higher incomes or renewed confidence in our economy."

Is there an echo in here?

How is that? Senate and House just rubberstamping institutions?

No that is how our economy ended up in the dumpster that he is still trying to get us out of.. the same posters here never seemed to mind the rePUBIClown rubberstamp from 2001 to 2007 that got us here.

Of course Obummer is campaigning and he is relying on the Elephants to reject this plan so that he can blame them for doing nothing to help the unemployed during the up and coming election campaign. What is sad is that both sides are digging in their heals for the fight and neither side gives a damn about the unemployed, the state of the economy or the debt the US government is in.

Something needs to be done to help the unemployed. Sitting on your ass and doing nothing isn't going to help them. There appears to be things in this package that make sense and a few others that appear to be just bad ideas. One of the problems with US politics (other countries do it as well) is that whenever some bill is proposed, it is this massive thing full of many many many different agendas with some pork and barrel thrown in to keep the lobbyists rolling in the dough.

- $240 billion of the $447 billion was related to payroll tax reductions. On it's own this is something the Republicans should support. But is it only in there to keep the Elephants happy? Do the Donkeys also believe payroll tax cuts will help create jobs?

- $105 billion in public works spending to modernize schools and improve roads and bridges. This is classic government make work projects. In some circumstances the infrastructure does need to be upgraded. But is never as easy as it seems. No doubt the lobbying begins as to who gets news roads, bridges and schools. Plus don't forget this is more borrowed money that just adds to the debt.

- $49 billion to continue unemployment assistance to millions of Americans who are receiving extended benefits. This is a tough one. If you keep giving people free money not to work, they won't look for work. But at the same time there are people who need it. Not a black and white scenario here. Definitely plenty shades of grey.

- $35 billion in local government aid to avoid layoffs of emergency personnel and teachers. You definitely do not want to be laying off your emergency personnel. But how much of this is pandering to the Donkey's union base. The "I am entitled to my entitlements" culture strikes again.

- $8 billion to fund a $4,000 tax credit for businesses that hire workers who have been out of work for more than six months. This is the one I have the most problems with. I can sympathize with some of the people who have been unemployed for more than six months, but it is just another form of affirmative action. Instead of hiring the best candidate for the job, some companies will hire the one who gives them the tax credit. I guess the people who have been unemployed for less than six months need not apply for work. They might as well just sit back and collect their social assistance. Now how is this supposed to be helping everyone Barack the self professed Messiah Superhero Savior of the Universe? Something similar is going on up north in Ontario Canada right now and it is just fucked up.

Individually some of these things in this package could be implemented and they may or may not help the unemployed. But as a group package I know I have problems with one or two of the items. But does not matter what I think. The Elephants will reject it, even if there was a cure for cancer because their primary goal is to defeat Obummer and the Donkeys actually want this bill to be rejected. If it is passed and it does not work, the Obummer and the rest of the Donkeys come off as incompetent. But if it is not passed Obummer gets what he wants, the ability to say the Republican controlled congress does not care about the unemployed.

FUBAR on both sides of the fence.

Ohh, I think the plan is bullshit. I also think that the plan will be a failure. I agree that it is a re-election ploy.

I also think that if the Republican controlled congress allows it to happen, they are just as culpable.

I thought Fox News described it best:

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2011/09/09/twelve-words-to-describe-obamas-jobs-speech/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+foxnews%2Fmost-popular+%28Internal+-+Most+Popular+Content%29

A favorite of the 12 Words to Describe Obama's Jobs Speech is: Presumptuous: He demanded – 17 times – that Congress immediately pass a bill no one has seen.
There are battered women? I've been eating 'em plain all of these years...
