Shelby Steele In Todays WSJ (he nails it)

And just what would be the "facts, substance and reality" behind the "well and truly fucked. forever" statement?

Read Pickering, Fujiyama, Leverette, or George H.W. Bush on the Middle East, how this current situation came about, how it was predicted early on by low-level analysts, and then read the CFR report that alludes to how a strong Christian Leadership in the White House will not only repeat the same mistakes made 30 years ago that gave birth to Haqquani and eventually the Taliban, and how a fundamental Christian leadership in the US will perpetuate the violence even as it reaches our own shores.
Facts? None, because it's hard to posit facts for the future. Substance? Lots of history and current affairs to indicate the reality of what we have, and where we may be headed.
Like I said earlier, I'm not SC material, so I'll gracelessly bow out of the conversation. Political conversations are fun when dealing with intelligence and ration on both sides. This one isn't fun.
For the record, copying entire content may not be "perceived" as theft, it *is* theft. The story goes behind a paywall so WSJ gets paid for future readings. That right was stolen from them when it was copied here. But hell...what's a little theft amongst the Christian Right?:P:D

Nice condescension there, Spot - you throw shit like that and wonder why you don't get 'intelligence and rational' responses?

Since you see my attemp to try and understand your opinion as "twsiting", I don't see much sense in continuing.

You were posting ideas and things I did not say or imply

I even posted before your twist post that Obama was not directly linked

So you are right

You "nailed it."
I do tend to condescend to those that loudly and proudly steal and subsequently demand the moral high ground. It's one of my short comings. I'll work on that. It's why I avoid SC most of the time, but the whole "He Nailed It" when there is nothing to nail sorta caught my sleeve.

So you admit that Steele's rant in fact is lacking any intelligent substance? If Obama is not linked to these "liberal '60's programs" Steele claims are destructive to "American exceptionalism", what is he ranting about?

Anyway it's remarkable what I, as a relatively newly minted US citizen (just over 2 years now!) learn on this site. It would never have occurred to me that giving people a hand when they need it is "un-American". Maybe I need to get some new boots I can use to kick people when they're down. No need to feel guilty about it either, I can just tell myself I'm motivating them to work harder.

On the other hand, maybe it's Steele's concept of what constitutes "American exceptionalism" that needs work.

Since we're talking about that whole 'moral high ground', when are you planning on apologizing to rushmc for your several 'thievery' posts (including this one) when he admitted he didn't know about 'fair use'?

I'll apologize to Rush when the county sheriff and court in Laguna Beach apologizes for giving me a ticket and subsequent fine because I didn't realize the speed limit changed from 50 to 35, I'll apologize for pointing out the theft of WSJ content that is clearly marked as copyrighted.

Or, when the Flying Spaghetti Monster appears in body as our savior...whichever happens first.:P

Must be nice to accuse people based on YOUR level of knowledge and not their own.

Damn...I wish I'd used that line on the motor cop that pulled me over! I tried a story that Mike McGowan shared with me, but it fell flat.

Thanks for proving my point again. Every driver knows about speed limit signs. Everyone does *not* know about the scope of copyright law or 'fair use'.

Someone who really nails it.
www.truth-out.org/goodbye-all-reflections-gop-operative-who-left-cult/1314907779

Mike Lofgren retired on June 17 after 28 years as a Congressional staffer. He served 16 years as a professional staff member on the Republican side of both the House and Senate Budget Committees.

This reads to me that he is more Libertarian than anything else

But in the end, on many points, about both parties, I can agree with him

Nails it?

Again, for many parts, yes, he does.

Any in particular that you would like to talk about?

How about the dismantling of our government by know nothing do nothing LOW-INFORMATION voters...ie...
Quote

Undermining Americans' belief in their own institutions of self-government remains a prime GOP electoral strategy. But if this technique falls short of producing Karl Rove's dream of 30 years of unchallengeable one-party rule (as all such techniques always fall short of achieving the angry and embittered true believer's New Jerusalem), there are other even less savory techniques upon which to fall back. Ever since Republicans captured the majority in a number of state legislatures last November, they have systematically attempted to make it more difficult to vote: by onerous voter ID requirements (in Wisconsin, Republicans have legislated photo IDs while simultaneously shutting Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices in Democratic constituencies while at the same time lengthening the hours of operation of DMV offices in GOP constituencies); by narrowing registration periods; and by residency requirements that may disenfranchise university students.

This legislative assault is moving in a diametrically opposed direction to 200 years of American history, when the arrow of progress pointed toward more political participation by more citizens. Republicans are among the most shrill in self-righteously lecturing other countries about the wonders of democracy; exporting democracy (albeit at the barrel of a gun) to the Middle East was a signature policy of the Bush administration. But domestically, they don't want those people voting.

You can probably guess who those people are. Above all, anyone not likely to vote Republican. As Sarah Palin would imply, the people who are not Real Americans. Racial minorities. Immigrants. Muslims. Gays. Intellectuals. Basically, anyone who doesn't look, think, or talk like the GOP base. This must account, at least to some degree, for their extraordinarily vitriolic hatred of President Obama. I have joked in the past that the main administration policy that Republicans object to is Obama's policy of being black.[2] Among the GOP base, there is constant harping about somebody else, some "other," who is deliberately, assiduously and with malice aforethought subverting the Good, the True and the Beautiful: Subversives. Commies. Socialists. Ragheads. Secular humanists. Blacks. Fags. Feminazis. The list may change with the political needs of the moment, but they always seem to need a scapegoat to hate and fear.

This is how we got Obama

Nothing wrong with making sure those that vote can are allowed to vote

but then that would not have helped ACORN's mission

Also around us is a prevailing anti-intellectualism and hostility to science; it is this group that defines "low-information voter" - or, perhaps, "misinformation voter."
