toy gun for my 5 year old? Nope he has the real thing and he's good!

Recommended Posts

Took my 5 year old son out to shoot is .22 today. He his getting really really good! Figure I'd put it in here as I'm sure it will end up here at some point. First video is him shooting the the second is him showing off all the cans he shot.

It's a cricket .22 no ears needed and dad screwed the pooch and left his glasses at home since that was 1.5 hours away I let him shoot anyway. :$ nice catch though.

A 22 is still loud enough to cause damage (up to about 140db). Ears are still needed.

Just because *I* knew the SPL of a 22 doesn't mean he did. Of course, that wouldn't let you get in your little dig, now would it?

well, i dont shoot my guns without protection. i bet someone around would have had one to lend. but hey, if you let a kid shoot, it's probably the least of your issues, right!?

What's the issue if it's done safely and under supervision, pray tell?

Try to make it rooted in fact, and not something made up from what you THINK American gunowners are like, thanks.

well, here's proof, letting a kid shoot without ear-protection; that pretty much sums it up and i dont need to say anything more..

Only valid *IF* he knew that a 22 is capable of causing damage, which he evidently did not.

So, that's off the table - try again.

nope, he didnt supply the kid with one because it's a 1.5hrs drive; pretty dumb reason not to, IMHO.

you know kids ears are way more suspect to permanent damage than a grown-up!?

Best re-read the post again - he left the shooting glasses at home, not earpro.

*I* am aware - he, evidently, is not. Again - you're arguing against what YOU know and not what *HE* knows as a basis for your claim.

LOL and this is why I put it in here. The decibels his cricket gun puts out is less then the Gamo pellet gun. I am 100% ok with him shooting it with out ear plugs. Safety glasses are always worn when we go out and if I'm shooting wears a very nice set of headphones but I wasn't shooting just him and his cricket gun. Call me a bad parent for not bringing his glasses but millions of folks grew up shooting without them and I made a judgement call sue me.

My boy started with the .22 at ten years of age, at five years old I didn't deem himsufficiently responsible enough.
but each kid is different. Now he's 14 and can field strip a Ruger, CZ, and Winchester, This year he started competing in club under 18 clay shooting comps
and so far has won two with his 12 gauge. This Sunday the wild boar season opens and he's going to get a taste, but with the dogs,
maybe latter in the season I'll let him take a position with me and a slug gun, (here the law won't let him have a center fire till he's 18)

I totally agree with starting them off young but only when they can differentiate between a real gun and a toy.

As I said each kid is different, I hope your boy has a whole world of fun and welcome him to the world of responsible shooters.

We never wore safety glasses or ear protection, way back in the 60s, when my dad took us out to shoot. My dad got my older brother a Stevens .22LR. I shot that when I was around 6 years old. No glasses or ear muffs. Got my Mossberg .20ga at age 10. Never wore glasses or ear muffs. To this day, I have never wore safety glasses or ear muffs. 2 weeks ago I took a hearing test for a job. Perfect hearing.

I can more understand wearing safety glasses and muffs at a range or at an indoor range, as other shooters are directly to your left and right.
Does anyone here wear safety glasses and ear muffs while hunting?

Sounds like the two of you have something great you can share :) We decided early that with him being around guns in our home, his grandparents home and his mothers that he needed to learn early.

When I take him out shooting I almost never shoot myself. He gets my full attention he is only 5 after all. He is also very lucky as his step father is a county Sheriff and his grandpa is a an old Oregon Logger from the hills who has taught hunters education and firearms safety forever. Between us all there are lot of guns and gun cabinets and safes.

While there is no way to judge if he really knows the consequences at his age he does have more understanding and respect then the average 5 year old if he happened to see a gun at a friends house that wasn't locked up. One of the things we talk about all the time. You see a gun not locked up you run and tell an adult. Which where he lives is a real possibility.

Last thing I knew what to expect when I posted this why I posted it here;) I love my boy and I'm pretty proud of him and enjoy telling the world:D Don't like it don't look:ph34r:

as much as in my opinion he is too young to shoot, he is not too yong to learn gun safety :)

Just because you were lucky doesn't mean others will be. The link with hearing loss is undeniable.
