There are all kinds of "christians."
I think the real Christians are the ones who take what Jesus is quoted as saying and use those concepts as guiding princeples. His direct quotes have to do with love, compassion, forgiveness. It's all the stuff said by his posse that gets the other "christians." I've seen some athiests act more Christ-like than some religious people.

QuoteQuoteQuoteThen by what definition are they Christians? That doesn't make any sense.
I know, right? That's what I keep sayin' but I don't think they believe me...Quoteall Christians I''ve met pick and chose which parts of the Bible they will believe in.
Really? You actually sat down with them and they confessed that to you...or are you just talkin' shit?
Nope, I have sat down and talked to dozens if not hundreds. For example...Answer this, do you believe in the Ten commandments? Now answer this, do you believe in death for homosexuals? Chances are you would have answered yes to the first and no to the second. Yet both are from the Old testament. Picking and choosing.
You'd need to grasp the difference between old covenental law and new covenental grace in order to understand...
The books of the Old Testament were written to the Jews for the Jews...We simply use them today as a guide to understanding the need for grace and how it came about.
We are not reconciled to God through good deeds and works of the law. The law cannot save you...it only condemns you. It points to Christ and the need for grace.
If obeying the law and washing my hands and getting circumcised can't save me, neither is killing a homosexual nor any other sinner who doesn't deserve to experience this wonderful life they prevert.

QuoteSo do you then believe in everything in the New Testament?
Well ya, at least that which I have grasped a decent understanding.
Now, actually living by that is the challenge...the goal.

The people who recognize what good is. The ones who call themselves christians do not have a monopoly on good. In fact there are "christians" who are evil. The Westboro Baptist Church bunch leap to mind. Where are the followers of Jesus standing up to them? The Patriot Riders do something but I doubt all of them would call themselves born again.

Where are we going and why are we in this basket?
Nope, didn't you read Vance's article?
Edit to add:
I carry my Bible because I have optimistic faith and It strengthens my resolve and it helps to allay my fears.
I have a concealed weapons permit because I have a pragmatic pessimism and it strengthens my resolve and helps to allay my fears.
The Scripture tells us that God did not give us a "spirit" of fear but, of love and a sound mind, 2 Tim 1:7.
Fear comes from the awareness of evil.
