kelpdiver 2 #28 August 19, 2011 Quote I've found that these comments are mainly directed at: (1) Conservatives; and (2) Women No one called Hillary stupid. A bitch and a lot of other things, but not stupid. Same is true for the non stupid women in the GOP - Dole, Whitman (though she did take that EPA job - bad move). But McCain picked a dumb one to pander to women voters. Quote Take Michele Bachman, for instance. Here's a right wing woman who does say some stupid things. Of course we ALL say stupid things. She's now being called "stupid" for saying that gas prices will be cheaper if she is President. We all know that's not why she's being called stupid. That's one of the least stupid things she has said. But there's long collections of details of her inattention to detail. Just this week she (or her campaign) mistakes Elvis's death for his birthday, and resurrects the Soviet Union. ADD: Ok - having seen Amazon's post about her promising $2 gas - that is pretty stupid too. No amount of Alaska crude is going to drive the price of oil down in the $30s/barrel, esp not with the deficits eroding the dollar. And when you think of shale/tar sand oil options, these aren't cost effective unless oil is selling for at least 60-70$/barrel. The most effective, if unpopular, thing the President can do to lower the price of gas is to lead on raising the gas efficiency requirements of our cars and more importantly "light trucks." Though even that may not work for long as China, India, and the developing world want a piece of our lifestyle (oil). Quote Often, the education of the person may be looked at as evidence of stupidity or lack thereof. Sarah Palin's educational qualifications were deemed no good - a BS from Idaho. So she's stupid. On the other hand, Dubya had a bachelor's degree from Yale and a Harvard MBA. Doesn't matter. He's stupid. Palin was deemed stupid after the disastrous interview with Katie Couric. I first saw the Tina Fey version - I was shocked to see how close to reality this was. Her practical education was poor. And if one wants to quibble, getting a Bachelor's in 6 years after attending 5 schools doesn't really show a great commitment, though this could be unfair. A friend of mine who got distracted by realities of work, marriage, kids, took nearly 20 years to get his. Bush is a different story. Unlike the women, which you suggested are being attacked due to sexism, Bush really was a case where people just attacked him because they disagreed with him. He's no idiot, though he certainly was a legacy admit to Yale, and his history of failed businesses looms large. But he also self inflicted some of this when he decided to dumb down his speech to play the Texas outsider. Quote Barack Obama? JD from Harvard. Must be smart. Bill Clinton? JD from Yale. Obama's fault is not in his intelligence, which is probably actually hampering his performance due to overconfidence in his beliefs. His problem is lack of experience. Clinton's problems - well it was a pretty successful presidency in terms of domestic concerns. Foreign affairs were weaker, and certainly his lady problems. But he was a Rhodes Scholar, and Phi Beta Kappa.

She's now being called "stupid" for >saying that gas prices will be cheaper if she is President. It would indeed be pretty unsupportable if people criticized her for that; heck, she might even be correct! She could become president, open the strategic reserves and have gas prices drop a few percent due to the temporary increase in demand. Or she could start a crash program to get more EV's on the road, which would either reduce gas prices or at least slow their rise. But she didn't say that, did she? What she promised was: "you will see gasoline come down below $2 a gallon again. That will happen." I agree that pejoratives like "stupid" are overused. But trying to make your point by "embellishing" what she said doesn't help matters; indeed, it makes it look like she needs the help. >How does one define "stupid?" Well, as you've often said, if people were less stupid you would be out of work - so you probably have a better working definition than most people. lawrocket 3 #31 August 19, 2011 Nope. I didn't miss it. I have a problem with ANYONE calling somebody stupid when, well, the person isn't stupid. I'm not sure if you are aware of it or not but I did actually manage to put in some troubles with the right wingers, too. I've seen more "stupid" allegations coming from the left. But yes, the right is there, as well. My wife is hotter than your wife.

GeorgiaDon 379 #34 August 19, 2011 QuoteI have a problem with ANYONE calling somebody stupid when, well, the person isn't stupid. I agree neither Palin or Bachman are "stupid", (and neither is Perry for that matter), in fact they are all geniuses at self-promotion. Calling them stupid just rallies their base, which is counter-productive. On the other hand, none of them have much interest in facts, historical, scientific, or otherwise. None shows much sign of open minded curiosity about the world; they all seem to have a very simplistic bumper-sticker slogan level of understanding about almost everything and have no interest in any deeper understanding. They seem to do just fine despite that. I don't think relentless self-promotion (which is a given for any politician) without knowledge, curiosity, or a willingness to learn is what this country needs in a leader right now. For all his personal faults, Clinton was a "policy wonk" who could never get enough facts, and the country did pretty well under his presidency. So "stupid" is out. How about "willfully ignorant", or "self-interested to the point of narcissism"? Don_____________________________________ Tolerance is the cost we must pay for our adventure in liberty.
