lawrocket 3 #1 August 17, 2011 I heard this on the radio today. This "rare" amoeba has killed a couple of people this week. This is my problem with the news. This amoeba IS NOT RARE. If there's a freshwater lake or pond the amoeba is there. A kid died of this amoeba a couple of years ago at Elsinore. It's in lakes. Streams. Ponds. It's in hot springs! I'm looking forward to seeing the explosion of news on this amoeba. Perhaps if they termed it as "rare infection" I'd not be as disturbed. But I get the sense that this is the next "FEAR!" bug out there. Yosemite waterfalls have killed more people this year than the amoeba has. My wife is hotter than your wife. DougH 270 #2 August 17, 2011 Interesting... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naegleria_fowleri Doesn't appear to be killing many people, but I can easily see how the media could exploit how freaky it sounds."The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

But yeah, "rare infection" would seem like more accurate reporting.

GeorgiaDon 385 #7 August 18, 2011 The article seems to have been corrected, at least somewhat, online. The governing principle is "if it bleeds it leads". Anything to get people to click on a link. Unfortunately people really do become incapable of handling anything more complicated that a bumper sticker slogan, which leaves them vulnerable to one-note politicians and other hucksters.
