Are you paid for it?

Nope, I'm not - and neither were the people that defended themselves against criminals.

Oh I get it now (Facepalm) Is that why yours is always such a nice shade of fringe right or corporate brown???

I'm guessing the bear flare were attached the tripwire I saw mention of in the article I read.

You'd also be guessing that the trip wires were there since the article doesn't specify that it was....or is that ASSUMPTION on your part?

Quote

Yes, Andy... when the kids screamed, the guides sat up, scratched their balls, took a leak, made coffee, and THEN finally strolled over and shot the bear.

Sounds like what happened, eh?
So you would be opposed to having someone awake and watching over the kids in a known place of high likelihood of dangerous wildlife encounters?

Quote

So, we're supposed to ASSUME that the campers would follow the same procedures as the military would in setting up a camp?

So you would be opposed to having someone awake and watching over the kids in a place of high likelihood of wildlife encounters......just because it would be somewhat similar to military procedures? Please don't take my kid camping there with you. I'd like him back alive, please.

Quote

You *are* aware that the bears they *did* see the day before the attack were a mile or more away, yes?

So we're supposed to ASSUME that there were none closer? That bears can't walk a mile? You may have heard something along the lines of, "it's not the ones you see that hurt you....."

(See? I can play that game, too!)

Which is what this entire conversation is about!
What went wrong and what could have been done better. You got anything?
You seem to be opposed to discussing better options and solutions and more concerned with naysaying.
My reality and yours are quite different.

Any proposals?

Oh HELL NO!
I'll never do that ever, ever again!

Seriously, yes.
Stay the hell out of the bears yard and they won't be eating you for breakfast.

From the article: Oedegaard said campers normally lay a tripwire around tents before they go to sleep. An emergency flare is triggered if an animal crosses the wire. It was unclear whether the British campers' wire had worked properly, she said.

and

Other postings detailed that the group had been trained in using bear flares to protect their camps, and also received rifle training.

You're the one that made the 'enemy territory' claim and the assertion that the campers should have followed the same procedures.

Maybe you can fire up the "20/20 hindsight" machine to make sure everything goes exactly how YOU think it should have.

Given the excitement referred to in the article about the sighting, I'm pretty confident that closer sightings would have been mentioned. I guess the bear must've borrowed that telescope as well, to see the campers before planning his attack.

I'm learning from, and copying, your form of communication since you are the best at it.
Getting to you already?
Do you really want to go there?

"Sounds like what YOU think..."

"Maybe you can fire up the "20/20 hindsight" machine..."

"You've done nothing but..."

And that's from just one post....to one person. Do we really need to point others to other people? Maybe a Mike's Diatribe thread?

I give up on you Mike. Sorry dude.

So back to the OP....

I say it's a great point in favor of being armed and ready when the shit hits the fan....no matter where you are nor what the situation.
My reality and yours are quite different.

"Maybe you can fire up the "20/20 hindsight" machine..."
"You've done nothing but..."

Yup...and let's see the post I was replying to....

"ASSUMPTION"
You do this the entire thread, then call me out because I don't agree with you.

Then...
"So you would be opposed to having someone awake and watching"
"Please don't take my kid camping, I'd like him to survive"
Two derogatory statements based on nothing more than that I disagreed with you.

Do we really need to point others to other people? Maybe a Mike's Diatribe thread?

I used sarcasm to attack your *idea* of what happened - not you directly.

Let me know when you actually want to DISCUSS it instead of just trying to tear me down because I don't automatically agree with your opinions.

It's stupid to go somewhere dangerous animals live.

Considering the most dangerous animals are humans I guess it's stupid to go ... anywhere.

Only true when armed with a weapon. Without, we're pretty low on the food chain.

Wrong. Humans commit assaults without weapons regularly (and are capable of using objects as weapons that are not intended as weapons).

Right, there is a long list of people who have committed an unarmed assault against polar bears, grizzley bears, lions, tigers etc.

Some even returned....yes you guessed it: un-armed.

Weapon; gun, knife, hammer, chainsaw, car, icepick, sticks, stones...
Those things, humans use on each other on a regular basis. Humans also kill each other with their bare hands, true.
I've yet to hear of any person going into the wilderness to assault a polar bear without a weapon in their hands. If there is such a person, I'd suspect that the bear slapped his dumb ass down and had a snack afterwards.

What is most striking to me about the London riots is people have no way to defend their property or livelihoods. The cops are just taking pictures... Incredible.

But its also important to note that with thousands rioting there was only one shooting and that was a looter shooting another. We're starting from a totally different point than in America, we have never had open access to firearms for protection en mass. You saw those feral thugs on our streets, can you imagine what would happen if they were all armed?
The result would be a whole load of dead people. If I lived in the USA I would want a gun, as all your criminals have easy access to them, ours don't and these riots demonstrate that. As for the police, they have ben cut and cut and cut (like our armed forces) to the point where they have no resources to do anything else.
In short once the genie is out theres no going back, your gun genie is out and always has been, ours isn't and never has been.

Not in the modern age, no...didn't the English Bill of Rights restore the right of arms to the Protestants?

The question is even if people were legally armed, would wholesale murder be the right way to go in response to what's going on? On top of that, you could bet that a fair few of the rioters would have guns too. It would be a bloodbath. Probably.

It would be very unlikely to result in a blood bath. The average legally armed citizen here in the US is not all that trigger happy. I am sure it wouldn't be that much different in the UK.

Then you would be wrong. Americans grow up around firearms and learn to treat them as a tool. With a few exception (ma among them) most Brits grow up in abject terror and irrational fear of firearms. For the most part our youth are educated about firearms from Hollywood and Gansta rap. Its a totally different culture, your knowledge based on US culture is not transferable to the UK population.

It appears that some people can't follow a thread ... an earlier commenter stated that it was stupid to go anywhere that dangerous animals existed and I stated that, in regards to humans, other humans are the most dangerous animals.
