The Rev Klaas Hendrikse can offer his congregation little hope of life after death, and he's not the sort of man to sugar the pill.

Quote

Mr Hendrikse describes the Bible's account of Jesus's life as a mythological story about a man who may never have existed, even if it is a valuable source of wisdom about how to lead a good life.

His book Believing in a Non-Existent God led to calls from more traditionalist Christians for him to be removed. However, a special church meeting decided his views were too widely shared among church thinkers for him to be singled out.

Pretty weird shit.

If you're talking about seeing Jesus and God as mythology and not actual beings, then not really.

People have talked about that for quite awhile.

You should read Joseph Campbell.

"When it happens, it happens down to earth, between you and me, between people, that's where it can happen. God is not a being at all... it's a word for experience, or human experience."

The most sensible thing I've ever heard, coming from a preacher.

When you're out of the blue and into the black."

And again, it's pretty much taken straight from Joseph Campbell.

If you don't want to get all that invested in reading all of his works, Netflix has the mini-series of interviews Bill Moyer did with him shortly before Campbell's death. Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth. Six hours well spent.

I read 'The Hero with a Thousand Faces' as well as had several Campbell posters on my wall, as a teenager, in the 70's. He was extremely popular with the Hippies. The Hero with a Thousand Faces was given to me by one of the neighborhood Hippies. Good stuff to read.
