People are always looking for a reason for why these things happen, he was a fucking nut, nothing more and nothing less. they come along from time to time and the ones that tend to run up the higher counts seem to have easier access to weapons.
I can't recall such a high toll ever in a European country. ( outside of being committed by people in nice brown shirts with shiny boots)

It is not justified to link this man and action to the progress party, but it is the furthest wright you can get in Norway political as a listed party. It is also the 2. biggest party in Norway, and they score their members trough their tax and immigration views.

Aside from the fact that Norway is such a low-crime country, the reason anything like this comes as such a shock is that there is a huge difference between radical thought and radical action... I think most people can relate to having un-PC ideas, but most people wouldn't act on those ideas... At least not by going on a massive shooting spree.

Very twisted thinking, but this seems to be what happens on occasion when one marries political extremism with a delusional personality. I think his motives, but not his methods, would find a substantial sympathetic audience here in the US, and even amongst the regular posters here in SC. I just hope no-one else decides to emulate his methods [to be clear, I am speaking of Western societies in general, not referring to any of our SC community].
Years ago I read an analysis of terrorist tactics, which presented strong evidence that left-wing groups tend to target property and infrastructure associated with specific companies or governments, and usually announce the attack in time for people to be evacuated, or else time the attack so relatively few people were killed. On the other hand right-wing groups aim for a high body count, as the motive is to disable institutions of organized society by creating fear and chaos, in the hope that they might be able to seize power in the confusion. This attack certainly fits that pattern.

Yes, he lays out the "qualifications" ...mostly things that he has already fulfilled. All that was left was the "spectacular attack".
And yes, the leftist socialists (and maybe national socialists) usually reserve killing for political assassinations, etc. Then, after they have safely gained power, they go for it in a big way with purges, executions, genocides, etc. There are exceptions - Dohrn, eco-terrorists, etc. (but those murders could be described as "collateral damage")

You may be right here. It appears that the "Overseer" is to be in control of the non-military "wing" of the organization. The bureaucratic wing charged with picking up the pieces of the military wing, awarding awards, funerals, etc. Anders is clearly not "non-militant" and is fascinated with the symbolism of the uniform and medals associated with it. He is a stickler for detail. He has chosen elements of the USMC uniform because he likes the look and a reasonable facsimile (or even the real thing) is available over the internet. He even describes acceptable tombstones and inscriptions, giving reasons for them ...all laid out in minute detail in the document. And now, true to his doctrine, he has told police that he acted alone. (speaking with two tongues to protect the group)
