'Bullet Tax' Proposed By Mayoral Candidate

A mayoral candidate's plan to reduce violence in Baltimore includes a "bullet tax" that he said will increase the cost of committing a crime.

Otis Rolley said he would, if elected, propose a $1 per bullet tax on all bullet purchases in the city. The idea was part of an overall crime plan he unveiled Tuesday...

So if a robber fires a warning shot to scare his victims into submission, his cost of doing "business" goes up by $1. I don't think that's going to serve as much of a deterrent.

On the other hand, people who participate in legitimate recreational shooting, firing a hundred or more rounds in a session, will no longer be able to afford to shoot. Since most rifle ammo now costs $1 per round, adding a $1 per round tax on top of that, effectively doubles the price of ammo for lawful shooting sports.

This won't have any effect on reducing crime but instead will make recreational firearms shooting extremely expensive for legal firearms owners and at the same time open up a new source of tax revenue for Big Government who only knows one thing "How can they find new ways to raise taxes?". Anyone who thinks this tax will reduce crime needs their heads examined.

Good grief ... when will the insanity ever stop?

I load my own ammo and buy my components on-line. It wouldn't hurt me, but it would hurt the retailers as more and more people began to load their own to keep it affordable, and of course it would hurt the folks that dont have the time or equipment to reload.

That's a loophole! They're gonna have to close that, for the sake of the poor children who get caught in gang crossfire. That box of 100 bullets that you now pay $20 for to reload with, is gonna need a $100 tax on it, to comply with this new law. $120 versus $20 - it's a small price to pay if it saves just one life.

Sales of guns and ammo must be way down in the last few quarters.

This whole thread brought to you by the same people who brought you the last run on guns and ammo when the evil gun grabbing black man was elected:ph34r::ph34r:

Better make that "if it's a chance to possibly save maybe just one life."

If they had an exemption for bullets fired at a range.

That way only bullets fired for "non practice" would be taxed.

Of course now all ranges have to be registered and the spent bullets tracked. Better make that tax $20 a bullet. Maybe at that level the tax can actually break even. :S

5 people voted "good Idea"???????????????????

5 anonymous voters obviously know how stupid their vote is.

You see people?
If YOU don't vote, you can't complain about the results of the bozos voting. Anybody in Baltimore should now have at least one indicator for consideration on voting choice.
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

No, it was brought to us by the latest grandstanding politician to propose the bullet tax, the approach with the lowest possible improvement (read: serious loss) in public safety.

I see that Rolley has an advanced degree from MIT. So not to worry; nobody takes those people seriously.

MIT, huh? I'm guessing that his Masters Degree in City Planning ensures that the criminals are now outsmarted and it will never occur to them to get their crime-committing bullets outside the city limits ...or steal them from the rest of the engineers in Baltimore who bought bullets with the $1 surtax. If the criminals do decide to break off an extra dollar per bullet and buy their ammo in the city it may force them to quit holding their guns sideways and learn to be a little more accurate.

(those MIT guys can't even come up with their own football cheers. >:()

queue up yet another gun grabbing evil black man.... yup dats da ticket.

Given Obama's past legislative history, the belief that he would enact more gun control as president was justified. And it has nothing to do with his skin color, so I don't know why you're trying to make something racist out of it. And the fact that rifle sales are down this year from last kind of works against your whole theory that it's a bunch of scared rednecks buying all the guns, since Obama still has two more years remaining in office. But hey, I know you don't like to miss an opportunity to sling your hate.
