Lack of education fuels HIV epidemic in South

"What we've found in Mississippi is very similar to what we've found in Zambia and other African countries," says Megan McLemore, of Human Rights Watch, which has published reports on HIV/AIDS in Mississippi and the South. The fact that only 50% of people have been tested and are in treatment is comparable to Botswana, Rwanda and Ethiopia. The death rate is 60% higher than the national average.

She adds, "In Mississippi, I spoke to people so fearful they'd be discovered that they'd hide or throw away their AIDS medications."

Funny I was just reading an article in the July issue of Scientific American about this.

My take:
Not surprising. Even less surprising was the higher incidence in Washington, DC.
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

I'm with popsjumper on this one. Not surprising at all. I was born and raised in North central Florida, and traveled the South East coast (usually as far as Virginia) pretty frequently, and less often, but still with fair regularity, the Gulf coast to at least Galveston. The poverty on the Gulf coast as a whole was staggering. Not that it was much better on the SE coast.

Truly sad.

OK, I restrained myself for a whole day. Can I make a tasteless joke about God, guns, Bible and bitterness now?

Please don't keep us in suspense any longer.
