How much experience should someone have before buying in as a DZO ?

Recommended Posts

Just curious if anyone has any feedback on how they feel about what qualifications; if any is needed, by someone who just squeaked by getting an A License & then 'buys' in to become a DZO...it would seem for the title.

I say squeaked by, as this DZO doesn't know how to pack their own parachute & once they obtained their A license at the end of last season, quit jumping !

The lack of this individuals hands on participation, limited skydiving knowledge & experience, familiarness with FAA, NTSB, & USPA regs. has already become evident !

The participation & attendence at the DZ is limited & brief, but when they are there...totally tips the pony cart, initiates conflicts in front of Staff, students & spectators.

Though the hangar has had some nice new innemities since the newly acquired position: updated fridge, a nice business card holder on the manifest desk, a partial partition to block the suns reflection on the tandem student's video screen & I think there's talk of curtains :P

Some dedicated & experienced staff & upjumpers have already 'left' the dz for good !

Do you think DZO's should have more under their belt, other than a money belt ? :S

Depends on how hands on they are. I find it hard to believe that anyone would buy a DZ for 'the title':S It means nothing. If the DZO has a good management team there is no reason why they need to have even made a tandem jump. Business is business and an investment is an investment.

i would say that Anyone who DOES have ,,,,

time in the sport:)years & years spent on a dropzone...;)
ratings, licenses and credentials,B|
and a brain in their head.:o

would NEVER do such a foolish thing!!!!!!!:S:S

Now on the other hand, someone with
"just enough knowledge to get themselves, ( and others) into trouble"
could very likely think that being a DZO, would be a good idea....[:/]

usually the THOUGHT that it would be a hugely profitable venture, can lead anyone, down that path...
sometimes it DOES work out, sometimes,,,,, not.
good luck

ps happy anniversary....

Why is this in Speakers Corner? Is this person a Republican or a Democrat? Are they gay or straight? Is this DZ in a Red State or a Blue State? Who did this DZO vote for in the last election?

You forgot one (John will not be happy with you).

Does this DZO own a gun? ;)

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Yep, we also need to know if they are in the country legally. I really can't see how we can answer the OP's question without this information.

Wolf Grulkey, the best DZO I've ever met (though many are cut from the same cloth) Has about 25 jumps and none in several years.
When asked about it, he usually explains, "If one owns a bar, one should not drink."

What he gets is that skydiving is only part of what makes this sport so great. He loves the people who jump, he loves to fly, and being a DZO seems to work pretty well for him. He's gone deep into debt at times while while extending credit to his friends that otherwise wouldn't be able to jump... His business thrives, and his DZ is highly regarded for it's friendly, inclusive atmosphere.

I've seen people buy a dropzone before they knew what it really meant to be a skydiver. They didn't understand the cameraderie required to have a well rounded DZ, and treated it only as a business...all about money. They lost much of the staff and alienated many jumpers in the process. The DZ survived, but it is now just a business.

I guess there are lots of ways to skin a cat.

They'll either succeed, or they'll fail. In the meantime, if you don't like it there, don't go there. Pretty simple.

And does he/she have a CCW?

+++1 I agree, Wolf is the BEST DZO I have ever met. He is the definition of a "class act." I only wish that I could get down there more. Hats off to Wolf for being what every DZO should be.

Ah.. the old school Golden Rule. He who has the gold gets to make all the rules... no matter how much they alienate any and everyone. Hey to people like that its all about their inner control freakishness.
