This is the new Sputnik.

So . . . I was out for my evening walk. Nothing TOO unusual except I do notice there are a LOT of cars parked in front of homes and not so many on the road.

Suddenly I hear POP, pop, bang, pop, bang, bang!

In my neighborhood this can only mean one of two things; a good day or a bad day.

People start rushing out of their homes and into the streets! They're waving their arms, jumping up and down and screaming. People are getting into cars and honking horns. POP!, BANG, POP, BANG, BANG!

Mexico won in soccer.

It's a good day.

Hey Quade. . .Right now, are you seeing fireworks in the night sky? I think your neighbors are still celebrating.

My neighborhood has access to some high quality aerial explosives. This is going to go on for a bit, but probably nothing like we'll see on the Fourth of July. THAT is insane.

Sadly, not all the noisemakers are fireworks. Unfortunately some folks also have access to hand guns, which isn't itself such a bad thing except they do have a tendency to fire them into the air on occasions such as this. The main police station is two blocks away from my house and we have a cop that lives across the street, but I think for the most part they kind of give a bit of lip service about not doing it. It's kind of futile anyway since it happens everywhere within a couple mile radius.

In Birmingham, they have gunshot location technology posted all over the city. The city had been notorious for having firearm discharges en masse during New Years and 4th of July celebrations, and some people got hit by stray bullets while sleeping at home. One lady was hit in the thigh while sitting in church! :S

It would be like trying to isolate a single bubble in a glass of soda. All the other explosions from fireworks would simply overwhelm it.

Actually, they have said the technology is able to distinguish a gunshot from fireworks. Don't ask me how, I have no idea. But they have responded and made arrests in the past.

Is this a sign that Mexicans in America give their primary loyalty to Mexico, and therefore would love to see America fall and Mexicans take over, as in the Reconquista movement?

I have a friend that used to live in Los Angeles, but moved to Hawaii a few years ago.

Does that mean he can't be a Dodgers fan anymore?
