marks2065 0 #2 June 16, 2011 Quotewww.healthnews.com/en/articles/3wUnWml0f5$wewZQ5WEUYd/American-Life-Expectancy-Dropping/ The reason the US is such a great country is that we have the freedom to do things that may cause a shorter life expectancy, like smoking drinking and skydiving. The US spends more on health care for many reasons including free health care for non citizens and developement of most of the new drugs and procedures used in the world. We could greatly reduce the cost of giving health care by eliminating most of the stupid lawsuites that drain money from the system and remove some of the restrictions on insurance companies that restrict them from selling insurance nationaly. How many people could have been treated with the money the lawyers pocketed? To have the life expectancy we have with our destructive activities and the governments interference is really a tribute to the medical comunities abilities. As a 69y/o you should be grateful that Medicare costs have risen only 57% as fast as private health costs over the past 40 years. The GAP between US life expectancy and that in every other western nation (all of which have some form of national health care) is increasing. It seems that governments (both ours and others) do a better job of cost control than the private health industry.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one. kelpdiver 2 #11 June 16, 2011 Quote Can you name a western European country where citizens are not allowed to smoke, drink and skydive? In general, they won't let you buy the biggest fucking motorcycle on the lot with your's learner's permit. Instead you get a lawn mower engine. And that driver's test! they make you prove you know first aid! On the other end of it, they still seem to smoke more (at least verse California), and unless laws have gotten more conservative, I was able to freely buy beer in Germany at 16. Parents serving it to their children was not a CPS offense. But as always, this study of mortality is a poor attempt to show a failure of the American medical system. If we swapped our's with Europe's, both sides would suffer. Each is better tailored to its environment. It's not a medical care system that is going to keep Americans from overeating. Unless they actually manage to, tragically, create the weight loss pill. Nor is it going to do anything about the fact that Americans work more hours than anyone else. Also are the figures conmpared the same, do both use pre delivery infant deaths in the figures? Are the figures af all compiled under the same rules? SivaGanesha 2 #17 June 18, 2011 Quotewww.healthnews.com/en/articles/3wUnWml0f5$wewZQ5WEUYd/American-Life-Expectancy-Dropping/ There seems to be some question about whether the article is referring to an absolute drop in life expectancy--or merely a relative drop in the USA as compared to other nations. Nevertheless I've been expecting life expectancies to begin dropping in Western nations at some point. There are many social safety nets--not only Social Security but also private company pension plans--which have traditionally led to a relatively stress free life in the early part of old age if one is still in fairly good health. It seems to me that many of these safety nets "peaked" for my grandparents' generation and will be significantly less for my parents' generation and even less so for my own generation. If the quality of life drops in old age--which it certainly looks like it will soon--life expectancies will also drop. Some people will be smart enough to figure out a good plan for retirement on their own--but not everyone will be that smart and overall we'll see life expectancies drop."It's hard to have fun at 4-way unless your whole team gets down to the ground safely to do it again!"--Northern California Skydiving League re USPA Safety Day, March 8, 2014
