>socialism is repugnant and unacceptable to patriotic Americans.

And yet wounded veterans take full advantage of socialized medicine. Ironic, ain't it.

Don't even try to make that stretch.

That is a slap in the face of everyone who ever served. They have paid more than their share into the system that allows you so many freedoms.

Have you ever served?

?? I fully support socialized medicine for veterans. Do you oppose it?

Your are using the wrong term. It is called "Veterans Benefits."

To refer to veterans benefits as socialized medicine is beyond stupid; it is an insult.

It's only insulting if you have a Pavlovian response to the word "socialized" not related to any knowledge of its meaning.

No, you dead wrong. It is insulting because no one voluntarily joins our military to uphold a socialist form of government.

Obviously, you never stepped up to the plate to serve your country in that manner.

There are plenty who served from your era who didn't volunteer.

You're saying that to Dan??? Seriously, is there no bottom to the ignorance you are willing to express?? Very few who post here have sacrificed more than Dan in the service of this country. You owe him a big apology.

I take it you have refused to partake of medicare and social security? Refuse to drive on the interstates? Refuse to hire or do business with anyone who was educated through the public school system or state universities? Refuse to buy food that has been inspected by the USDA? Refuse any medical treatment that is connected in any way to research funded through the NIH? After all, those are all "socialist" programs. In fact, your postings indicate a complete and utter absence of any knowledge of the difference between "socialism" and "communism".

I've stepped up. I also understand what the word "socialist" means, and am not insulted when I drive on socialist roads, use socialist ATC, call the socialist police, or go to the socialist VA for treatment.

Yes, it is. And if you look up the list of entitlement programs that the government runs, it's right there on the list. A government run, government funded program is a socialist program. There are lots of them; veteran's benefits is one of the better ones.

>To refer to veterans benefits as socialized medicine is beyond stupid; it is an insult.

You are correct. I am a member of the Air Commando Association, Combat Control Association, Vietnam Veterans of America and the Patriot Guard Riders. The VVA is the only group that voices liberal socialist values.

The VVA grew out of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War somewhat led by John Kerry. Both of these groups, in my opinion, are/were comprised of draftees.

Even so, when VVA members post liberal positions on the VVA Talklist they are confronted with opposition from the conservative members participating.

My peers in the other groups are solid right wing conservatives of the Christian faith. That is who I hang with.

It is not a question of word redefinition. It is a reaction against the dismantling of the American culture in the name of good ideas.

As I stated in the above reply to Stevebabin, the group that I hang with is reactionary against socialist principles. Why? Because we have made decisions about our lives that we agree upon. It is what binds us together and we have no reason to change.

Play word and mind games all you want. I remain convicted in my beliefs.

Too bad you think American culture is based on bad ideas.

"convicted in my beliefs" is often shorthand for closed-mindedness. Redefining words to avoid using them is another.

You're better than that. Use the tools of thought that God has given you to look at and understand the world, rather than just applying a pre-determined measuring stick to situations.

In other words, "don't try to convince me with facts, my mind's made up". I think your choice of the word "convicted" was quite ironic.

I see you're refusing to withdraw your disrespecting of Dan's service to his country. Perhaps you can check out this thread to get an inkling of how far out of line you are. Hint: read post 13.

I asked you already (as have Dan and jclalor in as many words): "I take it you have refused to partake of medicare and social security? Refuse to drive on the interstates? Refuse to hire or do business with anyone who was educated through the public school system or state universities? Refuse to buy food that has been inspected by the USDA? Refuse any medical treatment that is connected in any way to research funded through the NIH?" So have you renounced all those things, or are you just a hypocrite who likes to complain about "government intrusion" while enjoying the benefits of those "socialist programs" for yourself? Do you really believe public education, safe food, water, and air, public roads, medical research, air traffic control, the police, etc are all un-American bad ideas concocted by some evil "socialists"?

See above post to DanG.

Now, back to my position. I do not equate VA earned benefits with socialist benefits.

Socialist benefits are not earned in the same manner as those of the military veteran.

Does that help you?

>It is not a question of word redefinition. It is a reaction against the
>dismantling of the American culture in the name of good ideas.

So you redefine words because you are a reactionary?

Veteran's medical care is socialist. That's because it is run by the government, provided by the government and managed by the government. So is medicare. So is the Interstate system. So is Air Traffic Control. You can try to change that definition all you like, but if you have to resort to redefining words to make a cogent point you've already lost the argument.

>the group that I hang with is reactionary against socialist principles. Why?
>Because we have made decisions about our lives that we agree upon.

Sounds like you have agreed to make a lot of noise about it - but quietly use those services when it benefits you to do so. Which makes you like most Americans.

On a slightly related subject, the best song ever written about suicide "Suicide is painless" was written by a fourteen year old.

"Suicide Is Painless" is a song written by Johnny Mandel (music) and Mike Altman (lyrics), which is best known for being featured as the theme song for both the movie and TV series M*A*S*H. The actual title is "Song from M*A*S*H" (Suicide is Painless)".

"Mike Altman is the son of the original film's director, Robert Altman, and was 14 years old when he wrote the song's lyrics. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the 1980s, Robert Altman said that his son earned more than a million US dollars for co-writing the song while he only made US $70,000 for directing the movie".

I do understand how you discriminate between VA benefits and other things. I am still curious if you have refused to accept medicare and social security, refuse to do business with anyone educated through the public school/state university systems, refuse to buy USDA certified foods, etc? When you go on your Patriot Riders missions, do you somehow try to avoid driving on taxpayer built roads? More pertinently, do you really believe that all these things are un-American bad ideas? Do you believe that America would be better off if there was no public school system, no publicly built roads and highways, no mechanism to ensure clean safe food and drugs? If we had to just rely on the good will of manufacturers to ensure they didn't pollute our water and air?

You are relentless aren't you. I do not want to see our culture dismantled. I accept what we already have not what the current batch of politicians, Democrats and/or Republicans, want to do to our country.

I can only vote and bitch. This is my venue for bitching.

Does that help?

No, I am trying to explain that your position is reactionary to me and my peer group.
