ltdiver 3 #4 May 10, 2011 I was speaking with a train engineer just today about this matter. In his very practiced and knowledgeable opinion, the planned attacks would be on trains carrying biohazard and radioactive fuels, not passenger trains. Think of it, the destruction and devastation such an attack would have much more impact, with more lasting and long time effects. billvon 3,116 #5 May 10, 2011 I'd think you'd get a lot more out of a "do not ship" list. The overnight shipping companies are currently a huge weak spot in the system.
DougH 270 #6 May 10, 2011 Schumer is a idiot. Another big costs small results bullshit proposal. What about a 'Do not go to the Mall" list, lots of sitting ducks in our retails centers. What about a 'Do not ship via FedEx Air" list, lots of potential for cargo planes to start raining down across US population centers. I could probably come up with a 100 more, none of which will add any appreciable increase in american security, and will have a huge tole in fiscal cost and cost to the american way of life."The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
DanG 1 #7 May 10, 2011 Terrorists don't need to put a bomb on a train to take it out, they just have to take out the tracks. rehmwa 2 #10 May 10, 2011 Quote> it will probably make someone feel better, and that way Schumer can say he's "tough on terrorism." And this is the basis for pretty much all our legislation today. This one is unique in that it is a blatant example of all the others in that there is no subtlety at all in how it is SO stupid, and so useless, and SO EXPENSIVE. This clearly proves, it's obvious that our politicians are one of four things: 1 - amazingly stupid 2 - they think we all are amazingly stupid 3 - they just don't care 4 - all of the above ... Just like the other's he believes in two things. JohnRich 4 #20 May 12, 2011 QuoteTerrorists don't need to put a bomb on a train to take it out, they just have to take out the tracks. Yep. There are thousands of miles of track, and it can't all be watched over to prevent vandalism. All the terrorists have to do is pull up some spikes to loosen a section of track, and a nice deadly derailment will occur. Do it over a high bridge to magnify the casualties, even better. A passenger-carrying train, of course. Or arrange for some hazardous cargo to derail in a high population area. This was the first thing I thought of when I heard that Osama had been planning rail terrorism.
