You're wrong!... Or am I?

Recommended Posts

I thought it was a pretty decent theory of how we get that way.

I'm not so sure the conclusion gives us any great insight as to how to make ourselves and others around us more productive, because we're still generally going to reward the people that are "right" and punish those that are "wrong."

I would have liked to have heard more about how to let go of our "perfectionist" tendencies, which, for me, I think is an obstacle to productivity. Too caught up in attempting to get something "perfect" that I'll noodle over it and waste a LOT of time rather than letting people review it in early stages and get some outside advice as to how to make it better.

I would LOVE to know that as well. But... there are some benefits to making sure that it's as "perfect" as possible. Even if that means hours of extra work daily. But.... it would be nice to be willing to accept "good" - I was asked in residency "what is the enemy of 'good'?" The answer - "better." It's a daily battle to find that balance. :)
Back to being "wrong": It's hard to speak with AUTHORITY when you recognize that 50-100 years from now, those physicians will look at what we currently do and laugh at our inadequacies. So instead, we have to act like we're right. We might personally acknowledge that science is still changing and learning but... I'm telling you that most patients really don't want their doctor to tell them "take this birth control pill. it might help with your periods or it might lead to blood clots that could break and go to your heart/lungs/brain; it might end up hurting your liver; it might end up 'feeding' certain types of cancer." Now, even though I discuss those risks daily with patients... they WANT to know that I am RIGHT and this will magically fix their problem with no risks on their part. Many zone me out and often times they leave the counseling sheet in the exam room when they leave. People are SO VERY much like Wile Coyote... Life is better that way. Even here we see it. As she explained in that video, if someone doesn't agree with you, then that someone is ignorant or an idiot or evil. That's how many debates here go.

so.... I really think that this video explains it better :)

I knew there was a reason I like you so much.

Try singing that whole song. Except for the accordion/sax/guitar solo there isn't any time to take a breath.

Black is white up is down and short is long
And everything you though was just so important doesn't matter.
Everything you know is wrong,
Just forget the words and sing along.
All you need to understand is everthing you know is wrong."
