Why Geronimo?

Recommended Posts

Because it has a much better sound than "Operation Motherfucking Asshole."

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

The code name for the operation to capture Osama Bin Laden was Geronimo. Why was it named after one of the best-known Native Americans?

Reading is fun da mental...

Its right there.. part of history.

Bin Laden was referred to by one as a "21st-Century Geronimo, trying to elude the US military somewhere in a dry mountain range that could easily pass for the American West".

Afghanistan's cave-laced mountains, were easy to imagine using the template of the Sierra Madre mountain range thousands of miles away, where the original Geronimo managed to elude US troops for so long in the late 19th Century.

Referring to US military possibilities in the tribal areas of Afghanistan's mountainous regions, Allan R Millet, a retired Marine Corps colonel and Ohio State University professor, said in 2001: "It's like shooting missiles at Geronimo... you might get a couple of Apaches, but what difference does that make?"

Geronimo was extremely evasive and a wily opponent.

He was also tough as nails.

Geronimo was so great, Bin Laden would have to stand on his mother's shoulder just to kiss Geronimo's ass!

So true. Shame to attach the name of one of the greatest and most righteous American Indians who had ever lived. Geronimo fought the good fight and did what was right. I'd much rather they attached "pig shit" to Bin Laden.

It could have been "Bruce" but I don't think the impact would have been the same.

I've heard Obama was leaning toward "Operation Blazing Saddles".

Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly said he would like to see the Obama administration and the Pentagon change the code name "so that U.S. history books will not continue to portray negative stereotypes of Native Americans and that America's youth will remember Geronimo as one of our greatest war heroes."

Problem is, since Osama is dead they don't need a code word for him anymore.

Now Geronimo's tribe wants an apology for attaching his name to a terrorist.

I saw that coming.

I will admit that I was surprised by the choice, but there isn't a noun that could be used that somebody wouldn't bitch about.

They probably should have stuck to a meaningless two word code phrase.

There were some people posting on there who claimed to be native americans and yet also said they didn't care.

It's one of those many things in which the viewer can either decide to get offended or not.
